The retirement of "Mr and Mrs Thackley FC"
The Dennyfield club's two victories in their final two games of the season provided a fitting finale for outgoing workaholic volunteers Stewart and June Willingham.

Wins against champions Retford United and Selby Town ensured Thackley finished outside the bottom two, though restructuring of the non-league tiers means relegation from the division was unlikely.

"It would have crushed me if our last season at the club was the one that saw us lose our place in the division," said Stewart.

He is secretary and press officer while his wife June, widely acknowledged as the better half of the partnership, is fixture secretary.

Thackley were in the Northern Counties East Premier Division at its inception and have not left it since.

That record makes them the only team never to go up or, arguably more importantly, down in the entire history of the league.

"It is a record I am glad we have left behind and the last two wins have made it all the harder to bow out. I'm sorry we are packing in now," added Willingham.

Had the pair been in the forces or the services they would have been snowed under with medals and awards for going above and beyond the call of duty.

The club will remain indebted to them in the retirement that they deserve.

"After the last game the players were buzzing and said they couldn't wait for the new season to start.

"There were tinges of regret for me and I will miss it but to be able to please ourselves what we do on a Saturday for the other ten months of the year will suit June and myself."

The club is holding a leaving party a week tomorrow and all former players are invited to raise a glass to Stewart and June, who has organised the celebration night.

Many thanks for your assistance and a long and happy retirement .From ALL AT THE NORTHERN U19 ALLIANCE LEAGUE
