NOTICE Woolmer Green shoot Down St Ippolyts
Saturday 8th April 2006 Last week saw the final of the Premier Division Cup and the final group matches of the Benevolent Shield. In the cup final St Ippolyts were looking to complete the league and cup double. The Saints started the final on top for the first ten minutes and had appeals for a penalty turned down. They went behind however, when an excellent run by James Brewster ended with him cracking home a right foot shot from just outside the area giving the St Ippolyts goalkeeper no chance. Woolmer Green then dominated the game and went further in front, when the keeper missed a corner by Lee Keen and Ollie Rice headed home. Woolmer kept up the pressure and went in at half time two up. The second half was a different story as St Ippolyts applied all the pressure but were kept to long distance shoots. Woolmer were dangerous on the break and missed a couple of chances. Following a scramble with 15 minutes to play St Ippolyts got back in the game when Stuart Potasnick scored from close range. Woolmer were under constant pressure for the remaining time but held out for a deserved win and inflict St Ippolyts first defeat in the North Herts this season. Following the presentation the St Ippolyts player / manager Wayne Maguire was aggressive towards the match and league officials and ended up by throwing his runner up award over the stand. The league quickly arranged an emergency meeting and has withdrawn the player?s registration. On Saturday the final group matches of the Benevolent Shield were played. In Group ?A? Kimpton Rovers won a close encounter against Wilbury Wanderers with a 3-2 victory to put them on 6 points in the group. Goals from Craig Barnes, Sam Gibbs and Mark Harrington were the Kimpton scorers. Wilbury replied through Kerry Chase and James Turner. In Group ?B? Woolmer Green clinched the best runner up spot when they beat Fairland 7-1. A hat trick from Tom Younger led the way. A brace for Justin Brown and other goals from James Brewster and Josh Dance finished the scoring. The solitary Fairland?s goal was the best of the game when Wayne Cowan cracked home a free kick from fully 50 yards that left Woolmer keeper Ian Mann bemused. The semi finals take place next week with Magnum at home to St Ippolyts and Whitwell Village home to Woolmer Green.
