COUNTY LEAGUE (DIVISION 3) OVERCOME MID SUSSEX

The Mid Sussex League Representative Team is still seeking its first win of the season after being defeated 6-1 by Sussex County League Division 3 in an Intermediate Inter-League Competition match played at Jubilee Field, Three Bridges last Wednesday (16 November). Mids, fielding a number of new faces, were 2-0 down at the break but reduced the deficit soon after the restart through a strike from Ben Pollard and for the next 15 minutes or so, before the County League scored their third, looked as if they might get something from the game. However, the County League were able to maintain their two goals cushion through to the closing minutes before adding three more as Mids' players began to tire. The Mid Sussex squad was Andrew Stone (AFC Ringmer), Matthew McDonald and Andy Brown (both Lindfield), Dave Neathey and Gerald Manville (Phoenix United), Richard Clibbens (Rotherfield), Ben Pollard and Tom Earle (both East Grinstead United), Joe Davey and Ian Parsons (both Keymer & Hassocks), Chris Iddles (Burgess Hill Albion), Mark Shutt (Peacehaven United), Gareth Owens and Jeff Owens (both AFC Grinstead). Before the match Andrew Stone and Gareth Owens were each presented with an honours tie for representing the Mid Sussex League on three occasions.

Press Release - 8 November 2011
REPRESENTATIVE TEAM SEEKING FIRST WIN

The Mid Sussex Football League, after two successive draws in the Sussex County Football League Intermediate Inter-League Competition, will be looking to go one better when they host Sussex County League (Division 3) at Jubilee Field, Three Bridges (Three Bridges FC) on Wednesday next, 16 November  kick off 7.45 p.m. In what is an extremely tight round robin competition so far this season the Brighton, Hove & District League currently head the table with four points from two games followed by the Mids and the Worthing & District League with two from two with the West Sussex League one from one while Sussex County League (Division 3) have yet to secure any points having lost their only game so far. It was in the corresponding fixture last season that a 1-0 defeat through a solitary penalty resulted in Mids eventually losing out to the Sussex County League for the trophy. After Wednesday's match Mids have a break until the New Year when they play their final game in this season's competition away against the West Sussex League.

REPRESENTATIVE TEAM BOUNCES BACK

After their torrid time in Jersey in the FA Inter-League Cup at the beginning of October the Mid Sussex Representative Team, fielding some new faces, gained  a battling point in securing a draw against the Brighton, Hove & District League in the Sussex County League Intermediate Inter-League competition at Peacehaven on Wednesday last week (19 October). The Brighton League is currently heading the table so Mids will consider this a point well won and put them in good heart for their next encounter in the competition when they entertain Sussex County League Division 3 at Jubilee Field, Three Bridges on Wednesday, 16 November. Mids first goal came via debutant Matt Waterman who drilled a low free kick from 25 yards through a packed penalty area midway through the first half to leave the scores evenly balanced at 1-1 at the break and early in the second half Mids scored their second from a penalty converted by Richard Clibbens but a win for the visitors was not to be after Brighton equalised to produce a final 2-2 scoreline. The Mid Sussex League squad was Andrew Stone, Ed Hall and Brett Johnson (all AFC Ringmer), Dan Hassan (Willingdon Athletic), Richard Clibbens (Rotherfield), Andrew Brown and Matthew McDonald (both Lindfield), Matt Lloyd (Barcombe), Harry Magee, Dave Phillips and Matt Waterman (all Old Varndeanians), Mark Shutt and Luke Hamon (both Peacehaven United) and Gareth Owens (AFC Grinstead).

MID SUSSEX LEAGUE REPRESENTATIVE TEAM UPDATE

Having secured a point in a 0 - 0 draw with the Worthing & District League at Ringmer on 20 September 2011 in the Sussex  County Football League Intermediate Inter-League Competition it was with some optimism that the Mid Sussex League Intermediate Representative Team, accompanied by a number of league officials, flew out to Jersey on Saturday morning (1 October) for a First Round tie in the FA Inter-League Cup against the Jersey Football Combination, the only open age league on the island, at the Springfield Stadium in St Helier. Unfortunately for the visitors they ran into a vastly superior team, many of whose players regularly represent Jersey in the worldwide Island Games and other inter-island matches and clearly benefit from regular training sessions together that many Step 7 leagues in England cannot arrange owing to the the size of the area in which their clubs are located.

The home team swept straight into the attack from the first whistle and were 3-0 up within 10 minutes, a situation from which Mid Sussex were never able to recover. Some dour defending by the visitors kept the Jersey side at bay for amost the next half an hour with the teams going in at the interval with  the Jersey Combination holding a 4-0 advantage. A further three goals in a 14 minutes period shortly after the break and one in the closing minutes resulted in the final 8 - 0 scoreline. At the end of the day what had always looked like being a David and Goliath struggle was not to go the way of the underdogs but it did provide a learning curve for the visitors who had never encountered this level of opposition in their three previous ventures in the competition. In addition, the Jersey Combination, in the cause of friendly inter-island rivalry, is looking to this season's competition as a way to emulate the achievement of the Guernsey Senior League that won the 2009/2010 renewal!

The Mid Sussex side now has opportunties to redeem itself when it returns to domestic competition with an away game against the Brighton, Hove & District League at Piddinghoe Avenue, Peacehaven on Wednesday week, 19 October followed by a home match against Sussex County League Division 3 at Jubilee Field, Three Bridges on Wednesday, 16 November.

LEAGUE REPRESENTATIVE TEAM BACK IN ACTION - HOME AND AWAY

The Mid Sussex Football League Representative Team will play its first game this season in the Sussex County Football League Intermediate Inter-League Competition when hosting the Worthing & District Football League at The Caburn Ground, Ringmer (Ringmer FC) on Wednesday next week, 21 September 2011 kick off 7.30 p.m. In the same competition last season a single converted penalty in the 1-0 defeat by Sussex County League (Division 3) was the only thing that prevented Mid Sussex winning this competition, contested by the Brighton, Hove & District, Mid Sussex, West Sussex and the Worthing & District Leagues together with Sussex County League (Division 3), for the first time.  Next week's match come just 10 days before the Mid Sussex side breaks new ground on Saturday, 1 October when for the first time in its 110 years' history it visits the Channel Islands to play the Jersey Football Combination in the 1st Round of the national FA Inter-League Cup, a competition for leagues at Step 7 of the National League System in which the offshore islands of Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man are also invited by the FA to compete. Mid Sussex thought its progress in the biennial competition had ended when defeated in the preliminary round by the Gloucestershire County League at Yate during April but the FA's subsequent discovery of a breach of competition rules has seen Mid Sussex reinstated to the competition. The provisional squad for both matches is Charlie Bargery and Craig Brown (both Lewes Bridgeview), Ed Hall and Brett Johnson (both AFC Ringmer), Matthew McDonald and Michael McDonald (both Lindfield), Dan Hassan (Willingdon Athletic), Matt Lloyd (Barcombe), Ryan Smith and Harry New (both Balcombe), Richard Clibbens, Elliott Wilkins and Dave Kilby (all Rotherfield), Nick Irons (Dormansland Rockets), Dan Berwick (Jarvis Brook) and Mark Windsor (Forest Row).

THE NEW SEASON GETS UNDERWAY

While the Mid Sussex Football League's Premier and Championship Divisions' fixtures commence on Saturday, 27 August 2011 with the remaining Divisions starting the following week, the season opens at Leylands Park, Burgess Hill next Wednesday, 24 August when 2010 - 2011 Premier Division champions Maresfield Village meet Lewes Bridgeview, last season's Montgomery Cup winners, to contest the Allan Washer Trophy, the traditional pipe-opener to the League's season, in a match kicking off at 7.30 p.m. with a penalty shoot-out if the scores are level after 90 minutes.

Delegates at the League's Annual General Meeting held in June decided to cap the League's membership at 90 clubs or 150 teams whichever is the greater and the admission to membership for the coming season of seven new clubs  - AFC Crawley, Brighton & Hove Albion Disability, Burgess Hill Wanderers, Crawley Athletic, Ditchling, Polegate Town and Three Bridges - comprising nine teams, together with an additional five teams of existing clubs, means the League with a record total of 144 teams in thirteen divisions will run at near capacity. At the same meeting delegates elected Lawrie Parsons, the League's General Secretary who has announced his intention to retire from that role after 11 years at the helm at the end of the 2011 - 2012 season, as President in succession to the late Brian Hall, who passed away while in office earlier in the year, and Mike Brown to take full responsibility for.fixtures on being elected the League's Fixtures Secretary, while Rod Farley (Lindfield), Peter King (Scaynes Hill) and Erick Reilly (Buxted) were elected to serve on the Management Committee for the next two seasons.

Also at the Annual General Meeting Robert Gray, of the League's sponsors of the past twelve years Gray Hooper Holt LLP, presented Merit Awards amounting to almost £3,000 to some 27 clubs and it is hoped the same level of reward can be maintained for season 2011 - 2012. Other awards saw the Sportsmanship Cup go to Ansty Sports and Social FC while the Liverpool Arms Cup (for a first team scoring the highest number of league goals) went to United Services FC. Awards were also made to top referee John Doctrove (South Surrey) and Peter Dawes (North Sussex), the top Level 7 referee, while Russell Davison (Fairwarp FC) won the Linesman's Award for the fourth time in the past decade. A new award introduced for 2010 - 2011 was the Brian Hall Trophy presented by Mrs Jean Hall for the Secretary of the Year and the first recipient was Terry Gee of Maresfield Village FC with Brian Kensett of Willingdon Athletic FC the runner-up.

League Update

Delegates at the Gray Hooper Holt LLP Mid Sussex Football League Annual General Meeting held on 28 June 2011 adopted a rule amendment to cap the membership at 90 clubs or 150 teams whichever is the greater and the admission to membership of seven clubs - AFC Crawley, Brighton & Hove Albion Disability, Burgess Hill Wanderers, Crawley Athletic, Ditchling, Polegate Town and Three Bridges - comprising nine teams, together with an additional five teams of existing clubs, means that for the coming season the League with a record total of 148 teams in thirteen divisions will run at near capacity. The reason for the decision being that, if the League grows any bigger, it will need full-time officers to run it rather than the traditional volunteers of the 110 years it has been in existence. The delegates also elected Lawrie Parsons, the League's General Secretary who has announced his intention to retire from that role after 11 years at the helm at the end of the 2011 - 2012 season, as President in succession to the late Brian Hall, who passed away while in office earlier in the year, and Mike Brown to take full responsibility for.fixtures on being elected the League's Fixtures Secretary, while Rod Farley, Peter King and Erick Reilly were elected to serve on the Management Committee for the next two seasons.

After the formal business Robert Gray, of the League's sponsors of the past twelve years Gray Hooper Holt LLP, presented Merit Awards amounting to almost £3,000 to some 27 clubs, the Sportsmanship Cup to Ansty Sports and Social FC and the Liverpool Arms Cup (for a first team scoring the highest number of league goals) to United Services FC. Awards were also made to top referee John Doctrove (South Surrey) and Peter Dawes (North Sussex), the top Level 7 referee, while Russell Davison (Fairwarp FC) won the Linesman's Award for the fourth time in the past 11 seasons. A new award introduced for the season was the Brian Hall Trophy presented by Mrs Jean Hall for the Secretary of the Year and the first recipient was Terry Gee of Maresfield Village FC with Brian Kensett of Willingdon Athletic FC the runner-up.
