No Joy in County Cups.

Due to the bad weather over the last few weeks causing many games to be cancelled teams are now having to play double headers in order to catch up with fixtures. However before we get on to the league matches the pick of the games played last Sunday was in the Beds Sunday Lower Junior cup final where FC Templars were playing against Crawley Green Rangers. Unfortunately for Templars they fell at the last hurdle and had to settle for runners up as they went down to a 6-1 defeat. Dun Cow were facing Apollo First in the semi final of the Herts Sunday Intermediate cup but were knocked out of the competition losing by the odd goal in five. In the semi final of the division three cup Hitchin AB faced The Albion. It was Albion that booked their place in the final thanks to a 3-1 victory.

Now on to league action and in division one Baldock Templars lost 5-2 at home against FC Kings who moved up to second in the table, albeit probably on a temporary basis as the two teams below them have several games in hand.

Arlesey Town picked up their second win of the season with a 2-0 victory at home against Wymondley Park Old Boys in division two. MKS Carpentry had a hard fought 2-1 win away against  Ashwell. Engineers Arms and Ickleford Sports played a double header and in the first game a brace from Ross Pateman plus one each from Ryan Foster and Rob Curry helped Ickleford to a 4-0 victory. The second game however was much closer with Engineers pushing the table toppers all the way. In the end two goals for Ryan Foster and one for Sam Emson enabled Ickleford to pick up a 3-2 win and a valuable six points from the two games to assist them in their pursuit of the league title. Basement side MBDA took a 1-0 lead on the hour through new signing Sammy Nicholls' third goal in two games, but they were left to rue two missed penalties before going down 2-1 late on to join league leaders Crown Stotfold. St Ippolyts United won 3-1 in their away game against Old Red Lion.

In division three Almond Tree faced GSS in a double header. In the first game GSS got off to a great start when Theo Swaine scored in the first minute followed by an assist from Courtney Vincent. Just a minute later GSS doubled their lead when Courtney Vincent scored again this time assisted by Harrison Ahern-Farebrother. GSS however couldn’t hold on to their lead and in the eighth minute Almond Tree pulled one back and then levelled the scores twenty minutes into the game. In a tight second half the game was settled 3-2 in GSS’s favour by a Matt Sharp goal. The second game was dominated by GSS and they could have scored five or more but the match was won by Courtney Vincent’s strike two minutes from time. The six points picked up by GSS moves them in third place in the table. There was another double header between Fairfield Park and AC Malone. In the first game Malone’s won 3-0 and a 2-0 win in the second game secured them the maximum six points. Yet another second half collapse from Kimpton saw them slump to their eighth successive defeat of 2018 at St Ippolytts Rangers on Sunday. Despite going into the break just the odd goal down in five thanks to goals from Chris Burniston and Cameron Swinburn, failure to take straight forward chances and some statuesque defending in the second half saw Kimpton humiliated once again, this time by a side who at best were mediocre, but nonetheless took their chances when they arose. A further strike from Swinburn did briefly see Kimpton back in the game but once again basic errors and a complete failure to deal with repeated long throws saw the visitors continue their descent towards the bottom of the table after a fabulous start to this season’s campaign. The final game of the day saw The Half Moon continue their Jekyll and Hyde season, twice conceding the lead as their long unbeaten run was ended by Stotfold Lions. Tom Rowell put Moon ahead, only for Lions to equalise from the penalty spot. Elliott Cracknell restored the lead going in to half time, heading home a Chris List corner. In the second-half, Moon were frustrated by a string of outstanding saves from the Lions keeper, as they looked to extend their lead, and their failure to take these chances proved costly. Lions equalised on the counter with twenty minutes to go and then added teo further late goals meaning it was they who took all three points and a 4-2 win.

Chimneys Reach County Cup Final.

Last Sunday there were five games played in five different cup competitions. The pick of these was in the semi final of the Herts Sunday Junior cup where Two Chimneys were away against CHL. In what turned out to be a tight game Chimneys edged through by the narrowest of score lines 1-0. The Herts Sunday Intermediate cup quarter final match between Colney Heath and Dun Cow finally took place after several weeks of being postponed. It was worth the wait though for Dun Cow as they went through to the semi-final thanks to a 4-0 victory. In the semi-final of the Carl Couzens Challenge cup division one side Nirankari were at home against Arlesey Town from division two. Nirankari were too strong for their lower league opposition and comfortably went through following a 6-0 win. In the first round of the division two cup Ashwell lost 5-2 were at home against FC Templars. In the second round of the same competition Engineers Arms and Wymondley Park Old Boys couldn’t be separated after ninety minutes so with the scores level at 2-2 the game went into extra time. It was Engineers that booked their place in the semi-final eventually coming out 3-2 winners.

Now on to league action and in division two there was a top of the table clash between Ickleford Sports and Crown Stotfold. Crown Stotfold leapfrogged over Ickleford and into top spot after a 4-3 win. Old Red Lion and MBDA picked up a point each following a 3-3 draw.

In division three AC Malone dropped two valuable points in their pursuit of promotion as they drew 2-2 at home against St Ippolyts Rangers. Almond Tree lost 3-0 against Fairfield Park. FC Hitchin were at home against The Half Moon and the visitors continued their impressive recent run of form completing a league double over high flying Hitchin. FC Hitchin flew out of the blocks passing the ball around well and attacking dangerously but were unable to convert the chances they created. Having weathered this early storm Moon increasingly came into the match and after a spell of their own sustained pressure took the lead when Elliot Cracknell’s corner found George Burgess whose initial effort was kept out by the Hitchin keeper only to see James Brien bundle home the rebound. With Moon now in the ascendency Frazer Boules almost doubled the lead, again from a corner, but his header was acrobatically cleared off the line by a Hitchin defender. With minutes to go Hitchin almost earnt themselves a share of the points but Kieron Guy pulled off a flying save to frustrate them and preserve a hard fought clean sheet. The three points for Moon moved them up to third in the table. Hitchin AB and The Albion picked up a point each following their 0-0 stalemate. The final game of the day saw GSS have a good 3-0 win away against Kimpton whose form seems to have nosedived since christmas.

Chimneys Keep Their Perfect Record.

It was a fairly quiet weekend with only eight games being played last Sunday. In division one FC Kings won 4-0 at home against Baldock Templars.

Crown Stotfold moved to second in the table in division two thanks to a 7-1 win at home against Old Red Lion.

In division three AC Malone’s push for promotion were helped with a 3-0 win at home against The Albion. Fairfield Park and St Ippolyts Rangers took part in a nine goal thriller. A 5-4 win for St Ippolyts Rangers moved them up five places in the table to fifth. GSS romped their way to victory by securing a 6-0 win against Kimpton who continue their current run of poor form. Every player gave their all and put in an outstanding performance. Despite some good play from Kimpton and all the efforts of their keeper there was no stopping GSS on the day. The first goal came after eighteen minutes from Ricci Hamilton following a Sam Moulding assist. The second goal was by Charles Ayabina from a Joe Searle assist. Ricci Hamilton’s second goal of the game was GSS’s third before he turned provider for Theo Swaine to get the fourth. Matt Sharpe then got on the score sheet thanks to a Courtney Vincent assist and finally Hamilton was provider again when he set up Courtney Vincent for the sixth. Hitchin AB suffered their first defeat in all competitions since the start of December and were leapfrogged by The Half Moon who having defeated FC Hitchin last weekend, ended another team's long unbeaten run, this time securing an impressive 5-2 win. Playing some good football, AB took an early lead, only to be pegged back by a thunderous Elliot Cracknell strike which came somewhat against the run of play. The home side restored their advantage when Moon failed to clear a corner but, from then on, it was one-way traffic. First Brian Humphreys wriggled free in the box to neatly slot home and then ace marksman James Cameron-Ward rifled in a free kick to give the visitors a 3-2 half time lead. George Burgess added another to his season's tally, heading home a fourth early in the second half before Michael Day powered home to complete the scoring with ten minutes left on the clock. FC Hitchin picked up three points with a 5-0 win away against Stotfold Lions. This certainly was a game of two halves with the first half ending 0-0. Getting the five second half goals for Hitchin were Tom Mercer, Rhys Winnett, Richard Marvel, Josh stannack and the games man of the match and super sub Ben Moore who also picked up an assist. The final game of the day saw league leaders Two Chimneys retain their unbeaten league record with their eleventh win from eleven games and a narrow 2-1 victory against bottom side The Almond Tree.

FC Templars Through To County Final.

Last Sunday there were five games played in three different cup competitions with the pick of these being FC Templars playing at home against Jolly Toppers in the semi final Beds Sunday Junior Cup. Templars booked their place in the final thanks to a solid 5-2 victory.

FC Templars debut season hit and all time high as they booked themselves a place in the final.  From the moment the game kicked off Templars showed Toppers that they meant business, Kane Dougherty put his neck on the line challenging the keeper early on for him to cushion the ball round the keeper upon landing. Toppers then responded with a goal from nowhere to bring it back to 1-1. However by the end of the first forty five minutes a man of the match performance from Callum Donnelly saw the former Hitchin Town skipper score a sublime hat trick taking the score to 4-1 in Templars favour at half time. In the second half Kier Boyd rose above everyone in the box to blast a great header into the net which knocked the stuffing out of Toppers and really sealed the victory. There was just time at the end for Toppers to claim a late scrappy goal but this was too little too late and FC Templars will now face Crawley Green Reserves in the final next month.

In the quarter final of the Carl Couzens Challenge Cup there was an all division two clash between Ickleford Sports and Engineers Arms. It took penalties to separate two very evenly matched teams at Henlow, as the Engineers progressed to the semi final at the expense of Ickleford. In a game that ebbed and flowed, the Engineers came from behind on four occasions to take the game to spot kicks, despite being reduced to ten men from the 60 minute mark. Zippy Follano netted an early opener, and the Engineers should have extended their lead before Sam King pounced to slam home an equaliser somewhat against the run of play. Ickleford then went ahead as King again arrived at the back post to net his second of the game. With half time fast approaching, Brett Leader, returned to scoring form to equalise, a sharp turn and exquisite finish ensured the teams went in at half time all square. The second half started brightly for Ickleford and they deservedly got back in front when Tom Wilshere was on hand to fire in the rebound after the Engineers keeper blocked the first effort. The Engine then went down to ten men after Follano senior was dismissed but it was soon 3-3 when Leader converted a penalty after a challenge in the box. Hitchin Sunday League veteran and stalwart Ryan Foster then regained the initiative for Ickleford before Follano junior took the game into the extra thirty minutes with a composed finish. Both sides could have snatched it in extra time, and with both sides netting again, first Ickleford again through Foster and then Henlow via a sweet right foot strike by Rhys Tudball. Although it was a competitive fixture both sides stood together as the game went to the lottery of penalties. Gary Cullerton saved two of Ickleford’s efforts whilst the Engine had a perfect hit ratio as Follano junior, Alex Toye, Jim Gentry and then Chris Slough ensured victory. In the same competition Arlesey Town from division two faced division one side Garden City Galaxy. This was another game that had to be decided by penalties after finishing 2-2 at the end of normal time and extra time. Arlesey overcame their higher league opposition by winning the shoot out 3-2. Division one side Nirankari won 4-2 at home against division two side GSS. Getting the goals for GSS were Arnie Parker from a free kick and Harison Ahern-Farebrother with an assist from Charles Ayabina.

The final cup game was in the division three cup and this saw The Albion face St Ippolyts Rangers in the second round. A narrow 2-1 win for The Albion saw them through to the semi final.

Now on to league action and in division one Baldock Templars lost 5-1 at home against league leaders West who extend their lead at the top of the table to six points. Arlesey Town Sunday picked up another three points with a 2-0 win away against FC Kings.

MBDA and St Ippolyts United picked up a point each following their 1-1 draw in division two. MBDA had to fight back from a goal down against unbeaten St Ippolyts with their goal coming from a scrappy Nertil Halili strike. MKS Carpentry’s title hopes took a knock as they fell to a 4-1 defeat at home game against Crown Stotfold who moved up to third in the table as a result of the win. Wymondley Park Old Boys lost 1-0 at home against Old Red Lion.

In division three Kimpton’s poor form continued with a heavy 7-0 defeat away against second placed AC Malone. A close first half saw Malone go into break with a slender one goal lead following a defensive mix-up mid way through the half. Kimpton went into the game with a bare bones eleven players through injuries and suspensions but started the second half knowing they had the ability to get back on level terms. Ben Robb playing his best football of the season so far came closest to opening Kimpton’s account in the first half when his shot from distance came back off the crossbar. However, this was not to be the case as Malone dominated play from the restart scoring a further six times and totally over whelming any resistance shown by the villagers. Hitchin AB moved up a couple of places to sixth thanks to a 5-1 away against Fairfield Park. The Half Moon and FC Hitchin played out a nine goal thriller. The Half Moon have been consistently inconsistent all season and, after a disappointing defeat last week, this was again evident as they bounced back to defeat FC Hitchin who have been on an unbeaten run since November. The Moon raced out of the blocks quickly and were 4-1 up at half time thanks to strikes from Ryan Turner, Elliot Cracknell and goal-machine James Cameron-Ward, who netted twice in a fruitful first half. FC Hitchin began the second period positively though and reduced the deficit, only for Moon to effectively seal all three points when Ryan Turner doubled his tally for the day. Although ultimately to no avail, two late FC Hitchin goals did add some respectability to a score line that finished 5-4 in The Half Moon's favour.

Nirankari Edge Through To Next Round.

Last Sunday there were two cup games played and the pick of these was in the first round of the division one cup where Nirankari faced Arlesey Town Sunday. An under strength Nirankari claimed victory in what turned out to be a very tight game. Nirankari should have gone in at half time a goal up but the Arlesey keeper managed to make a superb save from a Jonny Butler header and in doing so keep the score level. A tactical change and re-shuffe by Nirankari saw the game open up more in the second half with Massey, Parkinson and Iwendiou guilty of missing chances and putting the game to bed. However the game went to extra time and the front three of Massey, Parkinson and Iwendiou for Nirankari saw them through to the next round. The first goalcoming from Courtney Massey who finished calmly after being played in by Iwediuno. It was Massey who then turned provider, after being played in by Iwendiou he rounded the keeper and squared for David Parkinson to wrap up the game and walk the ball into the empty net.

In the third round of the George John cup division two side FC Hitchin were at home against Baldock Templars from division one. Templars were too strong for Hitchin as they ran out 4-2 winners.

Now on to league action and in division one bottom side Stevenage Athletic were heavily beaten7-2 at home against Garden City Galaxy. On the score sheet for Galaxy were Tom Lee who hit four, Cameron Brawley with a brace and Stewart Smith.

In division two Engineers Arms and MKS Carpentry picked up a point each following their 1-1 draw. The draw meant that MKS missed an opportunity to go top of the table. There was a seven-goal basement-battle as MBDA were at home against Old Red Lion. MBDA led 3-1 on the hour thanks to a terrific Kyle Watson hat-trick, however, Old Red Lion turned the screw and came out  4-3 winners. The win moves Old Red Lion out of the bottom two. St Ippolyts United picked up another three points and moved up to fourth spot thanks to a resounding 7-2 win against Ashwell.

GSS lost 4-0 at home against AC Malone in division three. Kimpton’s 2018 slump continued with a crushing 4-1 defeat at the hands of Hitchin AB.  Returning to their home pitch for the first time this calendar year Kimpton uncharacteristically started the game on the front foot going close on two occasions before Chris Burniston struck from close range to put the villagers ahead. Unfortunately that was as good as it was going to get for Kimpton with Hitchin levelling eighteen minutes before the break. After the restart and playing into a strong wind Kimpton played some quality football, but their finishing was lacklustre and on almost every occasion the final ball fell easily for the Hitchin keeper. Three goals in twelve minutes for the visitors towards the latter part of the half completed a miserable return to the Recreation Ground and a dismal fourth consecutive defeat for Kimpton. Stotfold Lions were at home against The Albion and both sides picked up a point each following a 2-2 draw. It certainly was a game of two halves as the wind played havoc in the match between The Half Moon and St. Ippolyts Rangers. The Moon took a 3-0 half-time lead thanks to goals from Ryan Turner, Elliott Cracknell and a stunning forty yard free-kick from James Brien but it was Rangers who then dominated the scoring in the second period. A James Cameron-Ward goal for Moon was sandwiched between five for Rangers as the visitors claimed a 5-4 win.

Templars Through to Semi Final Of County Cup.

Last Sunday there were games played in two different cup competitions. The pick of these games was the quarter final of the Beds Sunday Junior Cup where FC Templars were at home against Cadoza. This was a gruelling battle between both sides but Templars managed to draw first blood with Ross Bottazzi poking home a goal from a flicked on assist by Kane Dougherty in the first four minutes of the game. Cadoza piled on the pressure after conceding the early goal but stout defending from  Jeff List, Jamie Taylor, Ross Haskins & Kevin Jupp made it hard a hard task to breach the Templars back line. Cadoza made several attempts at goal but goalkeeper Craig Wood provided a man of the match performance with nothing seeming to be able to beat him. Unfortunately Cadoza had to rustle up something special to beat the him with a rocket of a shot whizzing past the whole defence and into the top corner levelling the scores. However, it wasn’t too long before goal machine Louis Taylor put Templars back in front before the half time whistle. Many chances went begging in the second half before Louis Taylor tore through the Cadoza back four before taking on the keeper and slotting home the third goal. Cadoza did give F.C Templars a small.scare towards the end with a scrappy goal mouth free for all allowing them to blast a last gasp shot from close range in the back of net to pull the score back to 3-2. Templars managed to keep their composure in the dying minutes with the defenders making some important clearances and Craig Wood tipping all he could away from goal to book their place into the semi Final. In the quarter final of the Herts Sunday Junior Cup two teams from the Hitchin Sunday League faced each other as GSS were at home against Two Chimneys. GSS opened the scoring thanks to an Arran Roberts goal but then things didn’t work out for the home side as Chimneys took control of the game and scored four.

In the first round of the division two cup Ashwell were at home against FC Templars.

Now on to league action and in division one Arlesey Town Sunday lost 5-1 at home against Garden City Galaxy. Getting the goals for Galaxy were Carl Albon with a hat trick plus one each for David Thomas and Cameron Brawley.  Bottom side Stevenage Athletic suffered a heavy 10-1 defeat against Baldock Templars which makes it likely that Athletic are destined to finish at the foot of the table.

In division two Engineers Arms missed the chance to go to the top of the table as they fell to a surprise defeat against Old Red Lion who recorded their second league win of the season. A depleted MBDA side moved to the bottom of the table following an 8-1 defeat at home against Dun Cow. Getting the consolation goal for MBDA was Kyle Watson. MKS Carpentry also missed a chance to go to the top of the table as they lost 3-2  at home against Arlesey Town. St Ippolyts United moved up to third in the table after a 4-2 victory away against Wymondley Park Old Boys.

Almond Tree were at home against The Half Moon in division three. The Half Moon got back into the winning groove with a stylish 11-1 win. James Cameron-Ward capped a fine individual performance by adding four more goals to his season's total, with the other goals being bagged by Tom Rowell, Connor Cracknell and Elliott Cracknell who got a brace each and finally there was one each for George Burgess and Anthony Burton. Hitchin AB and AC Malone picked up a point each following their 3-3 draw. On the score sheet for Hitchin AB were Marvin Malcom, Alex Duncan and Isaac David whilst Dion Gibbs, Luthan Oyejobi and Steve Bryan got the goals for AC Malone. Stotfold Lions won 2-1 at home against St Ippolyts Rangers. The final game of the day saw The Albion face FC Hitchin in what turned out to be a battle on a boggy pitch. It was FC Hitchin that took all three points and move to the top of the table thanks to an absolute screamer from Joe Howard mid way through the second half.

Goals, Goals, Goals!!!

Who said football wasn’t entertaining. Last Sunday there were an incredible seventy six goals scored with thirteen of them being in just one game. First of all there were games played in five different domestic cup competitions. FC Kings faced fellow division one side Garden City Galaxy in the third round of the Carl Couzens Challenge Cup. Galaxy progressed through to the next round following a good 4-2 win. Division one side Nirankari were at home against Kimpton from division three. Kimpton found the going hard against their higher league opposition and crashed out of the competition with a 6-1 defeat.

Once the game eventually got underway fifteen minutes late it was Kimpton who started by far the brighter, going close three times before their hosts could muster any sort of presence at the other end. Once they had however, they took firm control of the game and could easily have been three or four up had it not been for a string of fine saves by the Kimpton goalkeeper. Just before the half hour mark however, Nirankari did make the breakthrough after a clearance luckily broke to one of their strikers who was able to slot home from six yards. Not deterred or intimidated by going behind the visitors struck back just five minutes later when brilliant work from Jacob Busse lead to Callum Kelly rounding the home keeper to finish into an empty net. With twenty league places between the sides, the home side and Division One leaders were visibly rocked by the audacity of their third division opponents and were lucky to go into the break honours even. The second half kicked off as the snow continued to fall, and with the ground underfoot becoming increasingly difficult it was the home side that took control of the game and they could have easily gone ahead had it not been for greediness in front of goal, shooting when there was a better option nearby. Kimpton suffered a blow when midfield maestro Sam Rafferty was savagely taken out and forced to leave the field with a serious ankle injury. Shortly afterwards Nirankari got their noses in front and increased that lead further with a fine strike from the edge of the box. Kimpton continued to battle and went close to reducing the deficit when Ben Robb’s fine strike was saved well by Nirankari’s keeper.   Playing uphill and into the relentless snow, Kimpton were dealt another blow going down to ten men when substitute Cameron Swinburn became the fourth Kimpton injury victim making the task of getting back into the game a nigh on impossible one. In the final quarter of an hour and with the pitch becoming whiter by the minute Kimpton ran out of steam and did their absolute best to keep the score line respectable, with man of the match Joe Swinson performing heroics after heroics keeping Niranakari from increasing their lead. However, Nirankari’s skill level and superior fitness saw them over the line and into the next round with a further three strikes before the final whistle.  The scoreline could have been a tiny bit more respectable had Adam Sayer converted a last minute Kimpton penalty but his weak attempt made for an easy save.

In the George John Cup third round division three leaders Two Chimneys were at home against Ashwell from division two and kept their remarkable season going with a 6-3 win.
