Sunday 5th March , Colchester & District Open Cup Competition , Round 3
Stanway Villa 0 , Cosmos Kings 3
Cosmos were again on the road early as they travelled to Colchester for this cup game. Conditions were difficult on a sticky pitch with Cosmos playing into a strong wind in the first half. Cosmos were forced to make change almost immediately after kick off as Luke Monger was unable to play on having picked up an injury in the warm up. In the opening 10 minutes Cosmos were under pressure from the home side as they struggled to find any rythmn and were given a wake up call as they were forced to clear off the line following a Stanway period of pressure. This sparked the team into life and they started to take more control of the game in midfiled areas , which resulted in a couple of close efforts on goal from the Cosmos forwards. Midway through the half Cosmos opened the scoring with a well taken individual goal from Ryan Melaugh following a strong run down the left , shooting across the keeper into the bottom right hand corner. The goal settled Cosmos further into their
stride and they dominated the remainder of the half , scoring again shortly afterwards with an excellently worked goal with Ben Davis breaking from a quick throw in and crossing from the left for Charlie Gardner to side foot past the Stanway Keeper.
In the second half Cosmos dominated the game for long periods and created a number of well worked chances to either be denied by the offside flag or good goalkeeping. Stanway continued to fight for an opening in the match and were denied firstly by an outstanding tackle in the penalty area by full back Billy Weaver and then an excellent save from keeper Jeffrey Wiltshire diving at the feet of the Stanway forward. A third goal would surely kill the game for Cosmos and secure the win and that is what Cosmos deservedly got late in the game ,as Ryan Melaugh scored his second of the match firing into the roof of the net following a good save by the Stanway keeper.
An excellent team performance all round made the long trip worthwhile and Cosmos parents also won both prizes in the Stanway raffle !!!
Parents and supporters will be pleased to hear that the team have a home draw in the quarter finals..............
