Kennington United 1 ( Rob Andrews)
Mansfield Road 2 ( Cameron Knight, Kessabi Soufian)
In a highly entertaining game played on a hard pitch with failing light Kennington threw away a point with the last kick of the game denying them a well earned draw. The first half saw the away side start the stronger with their fast passing they took control of the game but the home defence looked solid. On eighteen minutes though it was breached with a wonder goal, a ball played into the centre just inside the box was met with a firm chest down by Kessabi Soufian into the path of Cameron Knight who struck a powerful volley past the home keeper and into the net from sixteen yards out to make it 1-0 to Mansfield Road. The rest of the half saw the away side have the better of the play although Kennington did force a great save from the away keeper palming away a point blank header from a right sided cross in. Half time 0-1.
The second half saw Kennington come out of their shell and upping the tempo they played themselves back into the game with some neat passing football often getting joy hitting Mansfield on the break. On sixty minutes they nearly equalised when Ben Quinn’s free kick into the box was met on the volley by Simon Joyce only to see his effort clear the bar. Then on sixty nine minutes Joyce’s pass put through Rob Andrews right side of goal but he shot wide of the left hand post. The home side were now in charge and they were rewarded with an equalizer on eighty one minutes when James Clarkson’s long free kick into the box was met at the far post with a volley from Andrews only to see the keeper make a great reaction save but he palmed it back into the path of Andrews who didn’t miss the second time volleying the ball into the net to make it 1-1. The drama wasn’t over and with thirty seconds left to play a ball through the middle of the home defence looked comfortable for Matty Hutton in the Kennington goal to deal with but instead of booting the ball clear he decided to let it run into the box but quick thinking Kessabi Soufian capped off a good performance and nipped in to poke the ball home for the winner. A cruel ending for the home side who produced a fine second half performance that was worthy of at least a point.
