Downham Town (0) 1 Leverstock Green (0) 1 AET
Leverstock Green earned a replay after extra time with Downham Town when
they scored in the 90th minute. The game was one-way traffic except for the
first 20 minutes of the first half, with the Green peppering the Downham
goal for the rest of the game.
Downham had an early opportunity when a Paul Wren shot was saved by Lewis,
Wren was a thorn in the side of the Green all afternoon, with his quick pace
and intelligent play. Foster and Armstrong combined after 12 minutes to
set-up Byfield who shot at goal just going over the bar. Two minutes later
Wellings got on the end of ball on the edge of the box but again his shot
went over the bar.
Armstrong was the hero and the villain of the afternoon when he three
glorious chances to score in a 5 minute spell all of which were missed. Wren
popped up again in the 29th minute but Lewis parried the shot away for a
corner.
The second half saw the Green pepper the Downham goal with goalkeeper
McAnally the hero, making save after save and with Armstrong missing most of
the chances created by Leverstock. In the 47th minute Armstrong should have
scored when he beat the defender but put the ball over the bar when well
placed to hit the target.
Against the run of play, Wren scored for Downham when he ran on to a through
ball and put the ball past Lewis. In the 55th and 57th minutes Armstrong
again missed when he looked set to score on two occasions. Manager Vipond
made a change with Rob McKane replacing the sick Wellings in the 79th
minute, flowed with a double substitution, Leslie for Byfield and Smith for
Boad, trying to find a goal that would put the Green back into the game.
The final minute was eventful; Josh Price beat three players and was then
brought down in the box for a penalty, the Green players and supporters
where jubilant. Armstrong stepped up to smash the ball into the corner only
to see McAnally make a wonderful save. The ball was cleared up the field but
the Green fed the ball back to Price and onto Paul Matthews, his pass found
Armstrong in space and one to one once again with the goalkeeper, this time
he scored, levelling the scores and taking the game into extra time and
after a couple more wasted chances by the Green on to a replay on Tuesday.
Team: Lewis, Foster, Bourne, Jarvis, Matthews, Boad (Capt), Peddar,
Wellings, Armstrong, Price and Byfield.
Subs: Leslie for Byfield, McKane for Wellings and Smith for Boad.
