Wootton Blue Cross 1 AFC Rushden & Diamonds 1
Saturday, 25 August 2012
Wootton were five minutes away from springing a major surprise at Weston Park.
Diamonds bossed the opening stages but missed some good openings, Alfie Taylor closest to a breakthrough with an 18 yard shot which clipped the home crossbar.
Scott Sinclair's 22nd minute effort, set up by Adam Jackson's run on the left for Blue Cross looked likely to inflict a first defeat in UCL football on AFC.
Home keeper Chris Woodward made a fine save from Troy Johnston's overhead kick in the second period.
Taylor came to the visitors' rescue with an 85th minute equaliser after Joe Merrill's long throw caught out the Wootton defence.
A fine save from Woodward denied Ben Morgan a visiting winner while Jackson was well placed on the goalline to keep out Merrill's inswinging corner.
