Sheerness East  1    Crockenhill  1

Monday, 03 May 2004

After narrowly avoiding relegation last season, Crockenhill secured the point they needed for the League Championship at Sheerness. Chances created by both sides in the first half went begging, and the deadlock remained unbroken until midway through the second period when Crockenhill's Stuart Nicholson was somewhat fortunate to score off his shin following a free kick into the area which the home side failed to clar. Ten minutes later the "islanders" were back on level terms when a cross from the right was converted from close range by Ben Wolsely at the near post. Had "Crocks" Tom Martin not cleared a goal bound shot off his goal line with five minutes remaining his side could well have had to wait another week before clinching the title. League Chairman, Cyril Windiate, was on hand to 'present' the trophy, but the formal presentation will wait until the League's Dinner & Cabaret evening on 22nd May.
As for Sheerness East this was their final game of the season, their seventh home draw, and eleventh in all. They must ponder the fact that had they converted some of these one point games into three they could well have finished the season much higher than sixth, the same position as last year.
