Blackstones 3 Sleaford Town 2
Tuesday, 21 August 2007
Premier newboys Sleaford suffered a third top flight reverse as Stones collected their first league win of the season.
Sleaford took the game to their hosts early on with Jamie Shaw narrowly off target with an audacious lob and Carl Sedlan having a header cleared off the line.
Shaw was then thwarted by a fine save from Ian Flavell in the home goal, but it was Stones who found the cutting edge on the quarter hour, Dan Cotton feeding Graeme Epps whose cross was volleyed in by Richie Bond from ten yards.
Six minutes later Andy Boome's searching cross field pass picked out Cotton who fired past the advancing Andy Scott.
Miles Hunter missed a great chance to reduce the arrears while Flavell saved well from Michael Stones to preserve the home side's two goal margin at the break.
Early in the second half Scott saved well from Bond and play quickly switched to the other end for Stones to convert a Shaw pass and put Sleaford back in the game on 54 minutes.
Four minutes later a deep cross by Matt Hodgkin was met powerfully by Carl Sedlan's header and Sleaford were level.
Scott prevented Bond from restoring Blackstones' lead, but the home side were back in front after 71 minutes when Luke Kennedy's through ball sent substitute Elton Holmes racing clear to round Scott and apply a confident finish.
Shaw fired over after turning smartly in the box but as the visitors pushed forward they left gaps which Stones threatened to exploit. Kevin Ainslie's pass played in Epps to fire across goal, and with just two minutes to play Epps was brought down by Oliver Sidney only for Cotton's penalty to bounce to safety off the foot of the post.
