Premier Division
Bearsted 1 Hollands & Blair 1
Saturday, 27 September 2008
In a well-contested match played in a good spirit throughout, both sides can take some comfort from this result. Although Bearsted seemed to be the side to settle more quickly, it was Hollands who should have taken the lead after ten minutes when the lively Lee Preston shot narrowly wide from 12 yards after manoeuvring himself into a great goal scoring position. At the other end it was Steve Smith finding himself unmarked, who headed a right wing cross wide of Lewis Flischer's left hand post. Smith was once more out of luck 3 minutes later, when Flisher somehow turned over a curling cross-shot from under the bar to keep the scoreline in tact. With both Smith and Jason Batt combining well at this stage, a home goal looked likely and it was only a fine interception by defender Ricky Cavanagh that prevented Jason Batt from doing just that. However the deadlock seemed to have been broken when Smith side footed past the advancing keeper only to see his shot come back off of the post instead of entering the net. Indeed with the away side also enjoying some of the spoils, it was they who did finally open the scoring a minute from half time, when Daren Blackburn got around the back of the Bears' defence to provide the pass for Preston to make no mistake from close range.
The beginning of the second half saw the away side looking more composed and likely to increase the lead and this might well have happened had a neatly directed header from Billy Johnson been just a bit more accurate. A series of corners followed, the like of which demanded some stout defending and concentration by the home defence. However, as the game wore on Bearsted began to once more create some chances and the introduction of Russell Mcleish midway through the half, certainly had its' effect when he set up a great opportunity for Smith to score, only for him to be once more denied by the legs of Flischer. Soon after though, Smith did redeem himself after picking up a Lewis Smith pass which took him to the by-line, for him to turn and provide the perfect cross for Mcleish to glance a header into the net. This goal set the scene for a grand finale with both sides going for a win and although they went close the final whistle came bringing to a conclusion to a most enjoyable game.
