Brentford New Inn 5 Stonewall 1
Saturday, 31 August 2002
Neither side had a point going into this game. We were hopeful that we could come out of the game with something. We started very brightly and had several chances to go in front ? Neil managed to turn and fire off a couple of shots and I had a header go just wide.
Brentford scored first, and for a while knocked the stuffing out of us. In fact, in this period they scored 2 more and things didn?t look good for us. Lance had a header cleared off the line. We could have got back into the game has we scored at this point. But we lacked the final killer pass at times.
We were battling well and certainly weren?t outdone physically. They had one huge player ? number 10 ? and he was awesome ? strong and quick him and the number 6 caused us problems all day.
Half time ? 3-0 down
We got ourselves fired up and knew that a goal for us would put us right back into it. Brentford weren?t going to give us that chance. They scored a fourth goal soon followed by a fifth. We were actually starting to get into the game more and more but still lacked some creativity. Our long balls were just getting swept up by their defence.
We looked dangerous when we put the ball down and played. And the last 15mins were all pressure from us.
We pressed on but the goals weren?t coming ? Neil had one effort ruled out for offside. He did have a hand in our consolation goal, beating their left back (remember the slow one....!) and shooting well, the keeper saved but the rebound came out to me, and I really couldn?t miss from 5 yards out.
It finished 5-1 ? bottom of the table. We need to keep plugging away and the results will come.
Nice game to play in and the Brentford lads were perfect hosts ? looking forward to the return game !
