Inter-Regional Challenge Cup
Round 2
Bearsted 2 Borden Village 1
Saturday, 20 November 2004
Although it might not go down as one of their best performances it was enough for Bearsted to go through to the next round against a very spirited Divison One Bordon side. Indeed it was the visitors who started the liveliest competing in midfield, a feature which they carried on throughout the match. However it took only 7 minutes for the home side to take the lead when Martin McKenzies right wing corner was glanced on for Alan Swift to head home from 6 yards. It might have been two soon after when Richard Kennedy and McKenzie combined well to put Doug Loft through to force a fine save from goal keeper Chris Smith. At the other end it was the turn of Dave Richardson to keep the score in tact saving from the advancing Danny Maryott when clear through. With 10 minutes remaining of the first half Bearsted did increase their lead after Jason Batt sent McKenzie off down the left for him to cross back into the path of the striker to score from twelve yards.
The game really should have been wrapped up immediately after the break when Batt found himself one on one with keeper Smith whos first save fell at the feet of Jason Dunk who in turn was again denied by Smith with a second. Almost not to be outdone, immediately after it was Richardson who had to be at his best to prevent Tommy Price from scoring after losing his footing as he tried to gather the ball on the edge of the box. The away side did eventually score with 15 minutes remaining when Richard Kennedy was adjudged to have tripped Price just inside the penalty area. The resulting spot kick taken by Price was saved by Richardson only to see the ball come back out to the taker to score from close range. At this stage the game became more open with Jamie Kerszswiki going close and at the other end when Leighton Hill was very unlucky not to increase the lead with a powerful header from another McKenzie corner.
