Division One West
APM Mears 2 Belvedere 1
Saturday, 04 September 2004
An excellent playing surface at Ditton helped produce some good football from both sides. The Dere's took the lead after 20 mins with a strong run and cross from Craig Scott resulting in a well placed header from Bradley Barrett. APM came back strongly in the remainder of the first half and drew level with a wonder strike from the edge of the box by T.Abbot. They then took the lead shortly before half time when a free kick from J.Pike deflected off Simon Smith and flew into the top corner, scenes of Paul Parker and Peter Shilton spring to mind ! Belvedere pressed in the second 45 and came close on numerous occasions, Matt Orpwood missing a difficult one on one, Craig going just wide with a header and just inches away from connecting at the far post with another. Man of the Match Gary Cann did put the ball in the net but the ball was adjugded to have gone out from the corner. In the dying moments a mix up presented APM with a chance to extend the winning margin but a magnificent save from Neil and clearence from Jim left the final score at 2-1.Encouraging signs for both teams in this first league match, hopefully that is the end of the summer sun and this weekend will bring some more suitable football weather !
