Bearsted  0    Cray Valley (PM)  1

Monday, 13 April 2009

This was a game that held out no consolation for Bearsted who throughout had looked overall, much the more composed side. Early exchanges were even with limited goal threats at both ends. For Cray Lindsey Thomas in particular was showing some enterprise with his darting runs at the home defence, which generally remained firm and able to cope. With the home side gradually getting into the driving seat and more likely to open the scoring, it came as a shock when they were caught on the break after 25 minutes when Matt Kivvekey found space to run clear down the right to score low into the corner of the net. Just before half time though, saw a great opportunity for an equaliser being wasted when Steve Smith somehow managed to head wide from close range a Lewis Smith cross from out on the left.

The second half saw an increasing amount of Bears pressure as they went in search of an equaliser as time and again they got around the back of the Cray defence only to be denied by both the handling of keeper Stuart Back and some desperate defending resulting in a series of corners. With time running out the away goal found itself under siege with skipper Tom Martin managing to be at the heart of most efforts in maintaining the scoreline. However it looked at last as though the wall had been breached when Scott Andrews’s miss-kicked guilt edged chance from 5 yards after being the originator of the move with only two minutes of the match remaining.
