Deeping Rangers 0 Daventry Town 3
Saturday, 15 March 2008
It was a double celebration for Daventry Town after they outplayed Premier Division champions Deeping at Outgang Road to become the first Division One finalists in the Knockout Cup for nineteen years.
Events elsewhere also saw Town confirmed as Division One champions with seven games to play.
The unbeaten lower grade pacesetters were quick out of the blocks to stun a sluggish Deeping. They went ahead after just four minutes, Ryan Byrne's low shot from thirty yards finding the corner of the home net after Richard Wesley's corner from the right was only half cleared.
Byrne went close after Michael Goode's last ditch tackle denied Danny Nelson, but Town doubled their lead after fourteen minutes. Nelson combined with strike partner Tom Berwick before cutting in from the left and firing past home keeper Danny Bircham.
The pace of the visitors was giving Deeping all sorts of problems and a great pass from Adam Confue sent Berwick racing away on the right. The Division One top marksman checked back inside and steered a cross shot narrowly wide of the far post.
Nelson headed wide from a Wesley cross before Rangers started to get a foothold in the game. John Paul Duncliffe's free kick struck the foot of the post with David Cobb lashing a fierce follow up shot over.
A fine save from Bircham denied Berwick before Michael Stevenson shot wide for Rangers.
Deeping started the second half positively with Andy Ellis testing Daventry keeper Joe Melling with a snap shot, and then volleying against the top of the bar.
The goal the home side needed failed to materialise and soon the visitors were back on top. Berwick shot wide after Nelson and Paul Saunders opened up the Deeping defence with first time passes and then Saunders was denied by a good Bircham save.
Danny Matson volleyed over as Deeping sought a way back into the contest but Daventry sealed victory a quarter of an hour from time when Duncliffe tugged back Wesley and Berwick finished confidently from the spot.
Deeping were denied a consolation when Stevenson had a shot blocked on the line.
