Bearsted  2    Lewisham Borough (Community)  0

Saturday, 14 March 2009

This game pitched together two evenly matched sides with chances being created at both ends. During the early period seeing the home side failing to capitalise, firstly when Lee Fincham kicked over the ball in front of goal from a Steve Smith cross and then when goalkeeper Dan Teeley produced a great save high to his left turning over a goal bound effort from Ricky Stevens. As the half wore on so Lewisham came more into the game, putting together some slick passing moves one in particular being when Jason Pinnock and Demani Cambell combined to set up Alex Okisor only to be denied by a reaction save by Jason Reeves. At the back Joe Murphy showed some composure and at times it was the Bears who had to be at their best on several occasions when the ball was delivered over the back of their defence. Just before half time though, the home side might have gone in front when a Russell Mcleash effort was again saved by Teeley.

The second half saw a bright start by Borough and it took a combination of a Reeves save and some improvised defending prevented Lee Worboys from opening the scoring. Bearsted gradually began to settle and build on their play with the wing runs of Alex Flisher and Lewis Smith creating a few problems. Indeed it looked as though they had won a penalty when Smith was tripped in the area only for the initial referee’s decision to be over-ruled by an assistant’s flag. The breakthrough eventually came though, when midfielder Gavin Vennamore superbly headed in a Steven’s cross from the left side bye-line. Lewisham immediately took up the challenge going in search of an equaliser and with defender Jamie Mcinerney roaming forward the emphasis was switched to the other end seeing Okiser firing narrowly wide after dribbling his way in clear on goal. However the game was pretty well settled with 15 minutes remaining when the home side did win a penalty which Steve Smith converted following a handball by Murphy. Bearsted could well have gone further in front with two glorious chances falling to Flisher and Fincham both being wasted, leaving them having to stay defensively focused right up until the final whistle.
