Bearsted 1 Snodland 2
Saturday, 08 September 2007
Although the performance was considerably better than last week, Bearsted will take no comfort from another loss, this time to local rivals Snodland. Indeed they should have gone in front after just 5 minutes when Robbie Wheeler found himself in a great position, only to see his effort turned away by goalkeeper Darryl Broadway. At the other end Phil Lewis had to be equally alert diving to his left to turn away a shot from Luke Payne.Perhaps the nearest chance though was when defender Alan Budden rose above everybody to narrowly head over from 5 yards from a Seb Brimsted corner. The away side however did not make the same mistake 2 minutes from half time, when Dave English was allowed to fire home from 2 yards as a result of some inept defending under the bar by the home defence.
Snodland further increased the lead soon after the re-start when a slack pass out of defence resulted in Dave Jeal being put through to score pass Lewis with an angled drive from the edge of the penalty area. Although the play remained fairly even, Bearsted were finding it difficult to create too many scoring opportunities to satisfy the tireless running by up front for Russell Mcleish and Stuart West. Things could have been worse in fact with 20 minutes remaining, when a Lee Dawes run and cross-shot passed agonisingly past the left hand post to safety. At this stage the match certainly did not seem set for the nail biting end, but with only 10 minutes remaining and following a surging run by Graeme Andrews, the ball found winger Lee Radford to cross over the head of Broadmore for West to score from close range. The goal signalled the start of a series of Bear’s attacks, some of which went narrowly close. However, once more a positive result was not to be and this time it was Snodland who were to record there first result over their rivals for some 5 years.
