Rothwell Corinthians 5 Daventry United 2
Saturday, 22 December 2007
Sam Johnson was the star of the show with a four goal haul as Corinths extended their unbeaten run to five games with a convincing Sergeant's Lawn success against one of the promotion contenders.
United, themselves unbeaten in four games at kick off, started well enough, taking the lead on the quarter hour through Ben Collins who converted a Wayne Richardson pass.
Johnson opened his account with the leveller three minutes before the interval.
The turning point came early in the second half when Tony Burt's shot for United struck the crossbar and was hacked away from the line with Daventry appeals for a goal falling on deaf ears. Corinths seized the initiative thereafter taking a 48th minute lead through Sam Johnson.
Tony Ielapi extended the home advantage after 65 minutes and Johnson completed his hat trick seven minutes later.
An 80th minute headed Ielapi own goal gave United a glimmer of hope but with five minutes remaining Johnson's fourth goal of the afternoon sealed a Corinths victory.
