Bearsted  7    Milton Athletic  0

Saturday, 15 December 2007

On the day it was Bearsted who were the stronger side inflicting a high score on their visitors presently experiencing similar problems with results this season. With Kevin Swaisland causing particular problems up front, it took only 10 minutes for Bearsted to open the scoring, when Gary East and Stuart Brockman combined well to set up a simple tap in for the rampant striker. Perhaps an equaliser might have come about soon after when a Steve Smith corner was cleared for Daniel Baverstock to find Lee Bravery, only for the winger to run on and shoot wide when a pass might have been the preferred option? The second goal arrived after 20 minutes when Swaisland set off on a run from deep, to provide the perfect pass into the path of Brockman to fire home from 12 yards. Two minutes later it was three when a Smith corner found its’ way to Brockman via keeper Darren Nokes’ punch, for him to put the ball just over the line, for a goal to be given courtesy of a linesman’s flag. All credit to Milton who never gave up in their efforts to pull the game back, notably from the prompting of Ryan Davies and the efforts of Tom Godbold up front. Unfortunately though for them, the game looked lost when another Smith corner caused problems, resulting in Swaisland adding his second on 25 minutes. With the home defence, in which Neil Miller was looking strong, generally coping with the visitor’s attacks, the game was put beyond all reach when Swaisland took advantage following some inter-play with Brockman, to run on and round the keeper before steering his shot into the net just before the break.

After the interval and following a great save by Nokes from Brockman, the game became more even, seeing chances falling to the away side as Bearsted appeared to be resting on their lorals? Indeed a goal might have come about had Godbold been more accurate with a header from a deep right wing cross by Davies. With the half becoming more of a contest, further Milton chances did arrive, notably the best of which being when Sam Teague got in behind the defence, only to see his effort pass narrowly wide of the goal. Although their efforts remained resolute and with Steve Collar and Ricky Baverstock both putting in stout performances at the back, another goal arrived with 15 minutes to go when a hard, low, left wing cross by Brockman was turned in by East at the far post. The final scoreline was settled with minutes remaining, when a Lee Fincham through ball was latched onto by Swaisland to run on to round Hales before cutting t back into the unguarded net to earn three precious points and take his tally for the afternoon to four goals.
