Stewarts & Lloyds Corby 1 Wellingborough Town 2004 1
Tuesday, 11 December 2007
Les Hornby's first match since being handed the Wellingborough reins ended in stalemate at Occupation Road.
The Doughboys lost Dan Grainger to an early injury and from the resulting free kick Jed Ainge's shot was deflected to safety, while Vinny Shrieves failed to hit the target from close in shortly afterwards.
When S&L replied Greig McIlwain's fierce strike hit Wellingborough keeper Alex Malong in the face, but the home side broke the deadlock after 35 minutes, Bobby Drain left unmarked to head in a Richard Forbes centre.
Malong made a reaction save to thwart Richard Forbes, while at the other end Dan Spaughton volleyed over from a good position.
Deep into time added on at the end of the half the post denied Sean Brennan a second for S&L.
On resumption Spaughton was narrowly wide for the Doughboys while Drain twice went close to adding to the home tally, notably with a 25 yard shot against the post.
Derek Simmons missed a gilt edged chance for S&L after a Paul Doherty pass played him clear.
Against the run of play Wellingborough equalised after 70 minutes when Mark Forbes, under no pressure, headed a Shrieves cross into his own net.
After that the Doughboys visibly grew in confidence and looked more likely to win the contest. Rob Gould strode forward to volley narrowly over and Richard Lavin in the home goal made a brilliant point blank stop from a Shrieves header.
