Star came through a test of character in the West Midlands as their Vase dream took another step.

It looked an uphill task for Chris Plummer's men when Jimmy Dean received a second yellow card after 19 minutes.

By then Karl Gibbs had already had a header cleared off the line.

Tividale failed to make the most of their man advantage and created few openings.

Gibbs made the breakthrough for Star nine minutes into extra time, diving full length to head in Jon Stead's cross.

Luke McShane made an important save early in the second period of extra time, but Star were effective on the counter as Tividale were forced to chase the game.

Stead, who had been thwarted by the home keeper and an upright in extra time, sealed the win with a penalty in the final minute after being brought down himself.
