Bearsted  2    Sheerness East  4

Beasted should look at this result and realise that this is yet another game they should not have lost. It could be said that it was not the best of starts for when a penalty was awarded against them as early as the second minute for what looked to be somewhat of a curious decision? The result of which being Jamie Salvidge stepping up to open the scoring. Indeed things got even worse a minute later following some poor defending which allowed Glen Sheather the opportunity of steering the ball wide of goalkeeper Phil Lewis.
From 12 yards. The Bears did however finally settle down and begin to drop into some sort of playing pattern of their own and competing more in midfield, where John Baylis and Dave Wicketts were at the heart of most of the Sheerness’ attacks. Bear’s front men Kevin Swaisland and Stuart West were also causing problems for the away side’s defence, which was being marshalled at the back by Ciaran Aldons. Following a series of near misses and desperate defending a goal did finally arrive, when a long ball from midfield by Jodie Ricketts was headed on by Swaisland to find West, whose effort was parried away by Paul Woodford to be tucked home by the incoming Gary East to bring the game to life.

Immediately after the break Sheerness should have gone further in front when Darren Brown somehow turned the ball over from under the bar following a cross from Dale Bryan. At the other end should also have come the equaliser when Swaisland headed a Lee Radford cross into the grateful hands of Woodford with the goal at his mercy? The striker though, did not have to wait long when after 60 minutes he got onto the end of a Steve Smith corner to thrash home a low shot into the corner of the net. At this point the physiological balance had tipped and it was the ‘Islanders’ who were being asked to dig deep and defend doggedly. During this period Lewis also had to be at his be at his best, going full length to produce a double save to turn away a Baylis drive from 20 yards. With time running out and Bearsted once more getting the ball into the net, for what turned out to be a disallowed goal, the whole game once more turned around, when the resultant free kick found the unmarked Salvidge deep on the right, who in turn swept the ball up field for Russell Jeffreys to fire the ball home before treating the crowd to a view of his remarkable physic whilst celebrating his goal. From the kick off a deep lob from Alan Budden seemed to be heading into the goal and it was only a late tip over from under the bar by Woodford that prevented an equaliser. Unfortunately this was not to be the end, as with only two minutes to go and not for the first this season, Bearsted were caught cold at the back by another deep ball, for Brown to score and for his side to take back with them the early Christmas Present his opponents had just so generously donated.
