Lewisham Borough (Community)  0    Bearsted  3

Saturday, 10 November 2007

On the back of an awful result the week before this win was testimony to the tremendous commitment and application of this Bearsted side which was so necessary against a team enjoying better league fortunes this season. The meeting itself was a close encounter throughout, with both sides having their own chances to have won the game. However it was the Bears who opened the scoring after just 5 minutes when an overhead lob into the box by Stuart West found the head of strike partner Kevin Swaisland to dispatch the ball neatly into the net. Immediately after it should have been level when a snapshot by Ricardo Harvey just skimmed the crossbar. In midfield it was also an interesting contest where Steve Smith and Steve Benton had to both match their skills against the creative Harvey and Anthony Thompson. On a difficult surface there was limited opportunity to indulge in a too intricate play and the best opportunities came from the more direct play, one chance in particular resulting from such tactic when Duran Dicuala found himself clear only to see his effort sail high over the bar. Just before half time the score should have been increased and it was only a smart save by goalkeeper John Henning that prevented Lee Radford from scoring when put in by Swaisland.

However Bearsted did not have wait long for this goal as only 2 minutes after the break a Radford cross-ball eluded the Lewisham defence to find the incoming Gary East to plant the perfect lob over the advancing Hemming and into the net. Soon after Hemming had to be at his best when a West strike from the edge of the area forced a fine save out of the keeper. However with 60 minutes gone the all important third goal arrived when East found Seb Brimstead on the left to angle a low shot on target from 20 yards, which Hemming could only offer a hand to, as it found its’ way into the net. The game though, was far from over as the home side mounted a series of lively moves along each flank and one great opportunity was wasted when once more as Dicuala sent over an effort from close range. With time running out the impressive trickery of Duviah Dussard did begin to create one or two problems and possibly Lewisham may have had a penalty when that player seemed to have been tripped only for the appeals to be turned down and for the scoreline to remain in tact. However, Bearsted generally remained in control and thoroughly deserved the three points that they took home with them, which in recent weeks has proved a very difficult task.
