Coney Hall  2    Bearsted  0

Saturday, 01 September 2007

The final scoreline does not reflect on what might have been had Coney Hall not missed several good chances in the first half against a Bearsted defence that seemed to allow too much space and allowing Kerri Davies to exploit. Indeed the game was only two minutes old when the home side took the lead when John Fowler found himself free to take his time and score from the edge of the penalty area. The away side’s response was positive at this stage with debutant Stuart West looking dangerous with his surging runs and neat control taking him into dangerous positions. Unfortunately it was in the midfield that the Bears found it hard to impose itself and on numerous occasions it lost out which subsequently enabled real opportunities that should have been put away, with both Davies, Michael Cole and Imran Hamblin all guilty of not extending the lead from close range positions. Perhaps Bearsted best chance arrived just before half time when the advancing Lee Radford put a Kevin Swaisland cross over the bar from five yards.

Immediately after the break saw a great opportunity of an equaliser when Swaisland put West in on goal only to see his shot parried away by goalkeeper Dean Phipps. The introduction of Russell Mcleash into the game did have some immediate impact as the Coney defence became unsettled for the first time in the game with his runs providing his strike partners opportunities to get something back. However it was as a result of a right wing corner, which was cut out and sent swiftly forward, that Cole was set free to outpace two covering defenders and round Phil Lewis to tuck the ball into an empty net. With time running out and with two headers from Swaisland going wide and even more embarrassing misses at the other end the score to remained the same and allowed the home side the win that they deserved.
