Sheerness East  3    Bearsted  0

Saturday, 20 October 2007

The result far from paints a true picture of the game as a whole and if it had not been for two self inflicted wounds in either half; the result might have been very different. After having survived a lively start by the home side with Russell Jeffreys and Paul Colenutt both going close, Bearsted gradually took control of the game as their more controlled passing and build up, began to produce chances of their own, notably when Steve Smith went close and then when Stewart West headed over from a Gary East right wing cross. Although Dale Wicks was guilty of an amazing miss from just under the bar from a right wing corner, the Sheerness attempts mainly came from shots from outside the area, the result of which were easily dealt with by Phil Lewis. However the situation changed after twenty minutes when Jamie Salvidge opened the score with just such a shot, which for some reason was fumbled into the net by the usually reliable Lewis. Bearsted response was positive and they certainly dominated the play for the rest of the half. resulting in Lee Fincham hitting the post from 20 yards and then on the stroke of half time when an Alan Budden header brought out a wonder save from Richard Higgin to send his side in still in front.

Any ambitions that the Bears may have had of salvaging the game were dispelled after just two minutes of the re-start following a breakaway and cross that resulted in Budden diverting it into his own goal. Buoyed by this early good fortune Sheerness began to take control of the game with their swift wing play seeing both John Martin and Paul Colenutt coming close. The score and the game was sealed fifteen minutes into the half when Colenutt found himself in the clear on goal which enabled him to run on and steer the ball past the advancing Lewis. With defeat staring them in the face Bearsted continued to try to impose themselves and maybe on another day Russell Mcleash and Steve Smith might have scored rather than being denied by cruel bounces, when goals seemed certain. Having said that it was to be Bearsted’s day and they now remain at the wrong end of the table.
