Division One
Peterborough Northern Star 1 Buckingham Town 2
Saturday, 08 August 2009
Peterborough Northern Star lost just once on home soil in their title winning 2008-09 campaign, and in a major opening day upset they tasted anoher Chestnut Avenue reverse as Buckingham emerged from a far from impressive pre season to kick off the league season with a victory.
Star were closest to a first half breakthrough when Ronnie Fortune's header from a Mark Baines cross was cleared off the line, and early in the second half Paul Hill thumped a venomous free kick against the visiting crossbar..
The Robins took a 61st minute lead through Tony Hill who backheeled the ball into the net after Marcin Lubniewski spilled a cross.
Star were on terms seven minutes later through summer signing Jon Harrison who converted a Nathan Harne cross.
The champions went for the jugular, pouring men forward in a bid to win the contest, but in the dying seconds they left the back door open and were caught out by a quick counter attack as Craig Robson set up Jamie O'Grady to score Buckingham's winner at the second attempt.
