Last season's top two produced a close contest at Tatterrshall Road and a lone strike decided the match, Jonny Rowan moving to the top of the scorecharts with the decisive goal after 24 minutes, his third of the new season. The one time Grimsby Town man pounced to score after a shot from Gary Bull rebounded from the woodwork.

David Cobb was closest to an equaliser for the champions when he struck the bar ten minutes before the interval.
