Desborough Town  2    Cogenhoe United  1

Tuesday, 14 August 2007

Desborough made it six points out of six with a narrow victory in this close contest at the Waterworks Field.

An open first half saw the Cooks settle the quicker with Rob Foster missing a good chance and Rob Goldring volleying over, while Tom Mills tested Cogenhoe keeper Darren Watts from distance.

A great run by Dan Thomason on the right ended with the wide man thwarted by Desborough keeper Mike Evans.

A spell of end to end football saw Michael Byrne hit the inside of the post for Ar Tarn and Goldring shoot wide of the far post from a long clearance by Watts.

The deadlock was broken after 27 minutes, Eddie Mills cutting in from the right and beating Watts with a cross shot.

Four minutes later a goalline clearance by Tom McGowan denied Eddie Mills a second but after 33 minutes Tom Mills joined his brother on the scoresheet, netting at the second attempt after a surging run from midfield.

Back came Cogenhoe with a sublime Jason Lee crossfield pass finding Thomason whose shot bounced to safety off the top of the crossbar, but they were back in the hunt six minutes before the break, Foster's cross headed home by Neil Champelovier.

Cogenhoe enjoyed the bulk of the possession in an increasingly fractious second half which saw defences on top. Late on Champelovier had a shot deflected over the bar to safety while Ar Tarn substitute Jamie O'Neill twice went close, intercepting a Watts clearance only to fire wide and then drawing a fine save from the visiting keeper in stoppage time.
