The Romans maintained their promising start to the campaign, inflicting a second Division One reverse on relegated Town. Mark Dudley's 27th minute strike from the edge of the box, following good work by Martyn Cain and Karl Guy, had Irchester in front at the interval and eight minutes into the second half Jason Vaughan added a second for the Romans, heading home at the far post after Dudley flicked on Cain's throw. Matty Cox reduced the arrears with a header with twenty minutes to play, but Irchester held on to the points thanks to a couple of good saves from keeper Rick Hughes.
