United Counties Football League
2005-2006 Season
F.A. Vase
Round 3

Yaxley  2    Winchester City  4

Saturday, 10 December 2005

Yaxley made their exit from the Vase in a classic cup tie against 2004 winners Winchester. The Wessex League side controlled the first half with Ian Mancey opening the scoring after 20 minutes, and nine minutes later the same player added a second. A foul on Mark Paul gave Yaxley a lifeline but skipper Ricky Hailstone saw the spot kick saved with the keeper also blocking Paul's follow up, and the tie looked over when Ian Buckman scored a third for Winchester three minutes before the interval.

Yaxley looked far from finished though and they fought back with two goals around the hour mark. Substitute James Picillo got the Cuckoos off the mark after 58 minutes and Mark Paul reduced the arrears further three minutes later. Paul went close to levelling and had good shouts for a penalty turned down. Winchester survived and broke effectively to wrap up the tie a minute from time through Matthew Bicknell.

Yaxley: Steve Corry, Nathan Horne, Matthew Goode (Matt Hall), Chris Lenton, Ben Lawrence, Steve Burns, Mark Kingston (Scott Bogusz), Jimmy Dean, Mark Paul, Ricky Hailstone, Simon Acton (James Picillo).
Attendance: 212.
