Leverstock Green  1    Chalfont St Peter  1

Tuesday, 26 September 2006

Leverstock Green maintained their unbeaten record as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Chalfont St Peter in tonight’s league match, a fair result from an entertaining match between two teams keen to play decent football. Josh Price and Lee Johnson returned to the side, but Mick Vipond had only one fit striker at his disposal in James Armstrong.

Green dominated the early stages of the game, and had a chance in the 2nd minute of the game. Steve Boad flicked on a goal kick to Armstrong, whose pass put Darren Caseman in, but Caseman’s square ball across goal was cleared away. However, a goal was not long in coming. In the 10th minute Caseman chased a ball down the right, and put over a cross which just went over Armstrong’s head. Mark Welling chased the loose ball down the left, and crossed the ball back in for Armstrong, who was ahead of the ball, but managed to twist in the air to get his head to the ball and divert it into the net to put Leverstock into the lead.

Green kept the pressure on, and went close again on 22 minutes when Welling rounded off a neat passing move with a shot which brought a good save out of the Chalfont keeper. However, Chalfont began to play their way into the game. In the 28th minute, Green gave the ball away in midfield, and a quick pass allowed Chalfont’s Terrel Lewis to get round the back of Caseman and go clean through. Green keeper Mark Davidson did well, though, to stand his ground and save Lewis’s shot with his legs.

The second half was evenly-contested, with not many chances for either side. In the 64th minute a Chalfont throw into the box fell to Josh Price, who should have cleared but instead dwelt on the ball. Lewis nipped in to dispossess Price, and fired a shot past Davidson for the equaliser.

Green thought they had retaken the lead six minutes later when Armstrong finished from close range, but it was ruled out for offside. On 76 minutes Green won a free kick in a dangerous position just outside the box, but Price’s effort was saved by the keeper. Chalfont came closest to winning the game five minutes from time when Toby Francis went on a mazy run into the box, but his shot was saved by Davidson.
