Kingsbury London Tigers  1    Hertford Town  2

Saturday, 03 February 2007

Hertford went into this game without central defenders Kevin Kilroy and Glenn Draper, and with several players felling unwell, notably goalkeeper Nick Barnaby and left back Pablo Ardiles. Leo Turner was pressed into service as an emergency centre back in his first outing since November, and Dave Greenwood had to start himself for the first time in the league this season.

Team:1. Nick Barnaby, 2. Nicky Marsh, 3. Pablo Ardiles, 4. Leo Turner, 5. Dave Greenwood, 6. Paul Taylor, 7. Panayiotis Panayiotou, 8. Phil Goss, 9. Ryan Redford, 10. Kevin Cooper, 11. Lee Roberts. Subs: 14. Mark Seller (for Lee Roberts, 85), 15. Tony Neilson (for Nicky Marsh 62), 16. Ryan Wade (for Taylor, 45)

Hertford knew from the recent home game that Kingsbury had considerable skill and pace, and with the enforced changes, it looked like it was going to be difficult. That's the way it turned out, with The Blues eventually grinding out a result, but not before they had given their faithful following a scare. Kingsbury's Leonardo Ferreira tested Nick Barnaby in the third minute, with a shot from the edge of the box, and it was fully 10 minutes before Hertford even looked like scoring. Ryan Redford and Lee Roberts swapped positions, but Redford's cross was too high for Roberts to head. Then Redford could only prod the ball goal wards moments later. Then, on 13 minutes Ryan Redford made a good run down the left pursued by Tigers' player manager Eddie Cardoso, who conceded a corner. From this Leo Turner got up well to head the ball, but it was blocked away to safety.

Then Paul Taylor floated the ball onto Dave Greenwood's head, but the manager headed over. The opener came on 25 minutes, much to the relief of the 30 or so Hertford fans in attendance. Lee Roberts crossed into the box, and, when Phil Goss's shot was blocked by 'keeper Siki Kambila, KEVIN COOPER was on hand to tap in one of his easiest goals to date.

On 28 minutes, a good 25 yard strike from Tigers' skipper Tarik Ellekhlifi was deflected for a corner, and Hertford had to concede another as they tried to clear their lines. Kingsbury levelled the game on 35 minutes after a Hertford attack broke down and the ball was played rapidly down the slope to centre forward IVAN FORBES, who outpaced Nicky Marsh before lashing the ball past Nick Barnaby.

Forbes nearly did it again on 42 minutes, but this time, Barnaby was able to get in a save at the striker's feet. With the referee playing over 4 minutes of time added for no obvious reason, Kevin Cooper got increasingly frustrated by being given offside, so much so that he eventually talked himself into the referee's notebook.

Half Time: Kingsbury London Tigers 1 Hertford Town 1

Hertford brought on Ryan Wade for Paul Taylor at half time. Now with the advantage of the slope, the Blues looked more of an attacking force, with Wade playing some delightful passes over the home defence. On 51 minutes, Kevin Cooper found himself free in front of goal, but his finish was poor by his standards, and he scooped the ball over the bar. A Ryan Redford run was halted by Tarik Ellekhlifi, who was shown a yellow card for his troubles. Nicky Marsh was struggling with injury and had to be replaced by Tony Neilson, leaving the Hertford backline with only one regular member, against a very lively attack. Ryan Wade saw his strike deflected for a corner and then Dave Greenwood spent a long time on the ground after a facial injury. Greenwood recovered and, on 75 minutes, nearly put his side ahead when his looping shot only just cleared the crossbar, with the 'keeper well beaten. Tigers' influential midfielder Ferreira was booked on 78 minutes for pulling back Lee Roberts, as it began to look like there would be no way through the home rearguard. Then, with 85 minutes on the clock, RYAN REDFORD did it yet again, converting from close range as The Blues piled on the pressure, for his 30th league goal of the season, and 42nd overall. The Hertford fans behind the goal were sure that it was 3-1 moments later as 'keeper Kambila appeared to collect a Lee Roberts free kick behind the goal-line. Lee Roberts came off to permit Mark Seller to come on at right back, with Tony Neilson switching to wide left, with what should have been not long to play. The referee had other ideas though, and there turned out to be another 15 minutes to go. Good work by Kevin Cooper gave Phil Goss a chance, but the energetic wide man saw 'keeper Kamblia make a good save to deny him. Ryan Redford passed to Kevin Cooper, whose side foot from a couple of yards out was deflected by the busy 'keeper for a corner, as Hertford now threatened to over-run the valiant home side. Ryan Redford was booked for a foul and Ryan Wade for dissent, followed by Tigers' Henry Emineke as the referee seemed to want to book everyone in sight. Phil Goss was still full of running and his shot at the end of a great run was blocked for a corner. Eventually, shortly before Sports Report, the referee decided he'd had enough and a relieved Hertford had won their eighth consecutive league game.
