Hillingdon Borough  1    Tring Athletic  2

Saturday, 02 September 2006

Hillingdon have only themselves to blame for this defeat in a game that they dominated from the opening whistle. Time after time Borough players had good scoring opportunities which were either wasted or were saved by Man of the Match goalkeeper Gary White. Gary, an ‘old Borough player, left Hillingdon last season and came back to haunt them with a string a impressive saves that numbered well into double figures.

The home team had the blustery wind at their back and virtually played the first half in and around Tring’s penalty area. It only seemed a matter of time before a goal would arrive as they peppered White’s goal. The best chance fell to Daryl Craft who somehow managed to miss from 10 yards with an unchallenged shot.

In stoppage time, the ball found its way into Hillingdon’s defences for only the second time and as the ball landed at the feet of Rob Duncan, his snap shot looped over the head of Boro keeper Ben Harris, for a surprising opening goal.

The second half again had Hillingdon in the ascendancy but Tring now had an advantage of the increasing wing at their backs. Borough had a succession of corner kicks and finally Tring cleared the danger with a long punt up field. The ball found it’s way to the left wing and as  the ball was whipped to the far post Tring’s Peter Martin out-muscled James Duncan and headed home from  close range.

2-0 certainly flattered the visiting team but as time ticked by, it was that man again in goal, Gary White, who produced several more timely saves.

Boro were thrown a life-line with a thundering Sam Byefield shot crashing in goal from the underside of the cross bar, but this solitary score was all that Hillingdon Borough could muster.
