Oxhey Jets  5    Langford  1

Saturday, 02 December 2006

The Reds visited Hertfordshire based Oxhey Jets on Saturday and on a heavy pitch saw only one change from the side defeated at Tring Athletic in midweek. Kevin Patterson coming back from injury replacing Gary Hoy.

Opening exchanges were fairly even with the first real chance on goal falling to Jets, Mark Ayres, as he burst through from midfield firing his effort over the bar. The Jets opener came in controversial fashion with an apparent foul on Ricky Case going unpunished. Play was allowed to carry on and Wayne Gladdy took advantage rounding a static Winsor to give the home side a fifteenth minute lead. Incensed Reds wasted little time in getting back on terms, less than a minute in fact. Ricky Case made ground down the right and crossing for Lee Pateman to bury his header into the far corner giving home goalkeeper Kevin Paul no chance. The Jets had two chances to regain the lead but Wayne Gladdy saw his weak shot easily taken by Winsor and then James Arthur headed wide from Steve Stratford’s cross. Although not having too many chances the visitors came closest when Robert Groves fashioned a left footed effort that struck the bottom of the upright before rebounding to safety.

Oxhey were having the better of the physical challenges throughout the half and after winning another challenge Ian Bywater blazed a shot wide when he should have done better. Winsor then denied Hussain Alli with a good save. As the interval beckoned James Arthur gave the home side the half time lead with a cool finish.

Langford tried hard to regain level terms. Joe Delasalle fired in a free kick that home keeper Paul turned away for a corner and Mark Whittaker was off target with a header from Jim Bywater’s cross. The home side still looked favourites to retain the lead and Langford had a lucky let off when keeper Winsor completely missed a through ball, allowing James Arthur an open goal, unbelievably he missed the opportunity. Robert Groves so nearly made the Jets pay for the missed chance as his free kick forced a goal line clearance. Just after the hour Winsor was to begin a miserable period of the game for the Reds and especially himself. His goal kick went straight out to Tim O’Mara, who punished the error by finishing with a shot that went in off the inside of the post for 3-1. The Reds survived an extension of the home sides lead when Winsor made saves from Beadle and Gladdy but must be held responsible for the Jets fourth goal on seventy six minutes. Following a corner kick he dropped the ball straight at the feet of Chris Hardy, a gift of a goal from close range. A fifth goal soon came five minutes later and a second of the day for Jamie Arthur as he clipped the ball over Winsor’s head from the arc of the corner flag whether he meant to go for goal or not they all count and finished off a disconsolate looking Langford side who deserved a closer score line on the day.
