Green secured their first double of the season when they beat London Colney
at Pancake Lane. Green put Colney under pressure from the start, but the
visitors were constantly catching Green out with their offside ploy. As
early as the second minute Green could have gone in front when Tony Sears
took a throw-in but Tony Oliver hit the ball over the bar from the edge of
the eighteen-yard box. With seven minutes gone Green were awarded a
free-kick about 25 yards out, but Matt Johnsons kick hit the crossbar. It
was 17 minutes before the visitors showed when they won their first corner
but the Green defence easily cleared. Greens determination paid off after
24 minutes when Andy Phillips put a free-kick through to Matt Johnson who
kindly obliged with his first goal. Colney hit back and keeper Matt
Timberlake easily took a Gary Doolan header.
Green came out after the break with the same determination to win and soon
after the restart an Oliver cross was headed over by Steve Boad. Danny Adams
hit back for the visitors shooting just over, but with 63 minutes on the
clock Green went further ahead Matt Wardle ran at the defence putting
through an excellent ball for Johnson to tuck it neatly past the keeper.
Adams who had come on from the bench for the visitors looked lively and
Timberlake had to make a good save. Green had a penalty appeal turned down
on 70 minutes when Johnson was bundled off the ball in the box. Colney came
back and Timberlake had to make two attempts to keep out Dave Hewings
cross. It looked as though Green would go further ahead five minutes later
as Sears had a good run but his shot went straight at Seidu in the visitors
goal. With ten minutes remaining Green brought on Dennis Fenemore for Matt
Johnson. With five minutes to go Green got their third goal when Wardles
shot hit the post and Boad hit home the rebound. Green lapsed in the final
two minutes and Steve Flain got a consolation for the visitors.
