Saturday, 08 November 2003

Leverstock Green lost to Potters Bar Town after being two goals up after 30 minutes of play, the game saw a disputed penalty and a send off in a lively game of football which they probably should have won. Andy Phillips was cautioned after just two minutes of play for dissent, but this was not a reflection on the game where the referee tried to keep the game going at all times.

The Green started off at a great pace and they opened up with the first real chance in the game after 9 minutes. Potters Bar had a good chance in the 13th minute when Neil Jordon found some space on the left but he put his shot high over the bar. A few minutes later the Green again created another chance to score when a quick throw in by Oliver to Phillips who shot over the bar.

The Green increased their lead in the 27th minute, Kevin Hyde of Potters bar shot at goal and Timberlake made a good save, his fly kick up field was latched on to by Matt Wardle who smashed the ball into the net from 30 yards.

Potters Bar came back at the Green and scored two goals in three minutes to equalise. The first in the 38th minute came from a free kick to the far post and the ball was knocked back across the goal and Hyde scored with a neat header. Three minutes later the equaliser came when Hall scored with a looping shot that saw Timberlake stranded of his goal line and the ball flew into an empty net.

The Green came right back on the half time whistle with two good chances, a Steve Boad header to Oliver who passed to Sears but his goal bound shot was touched away by Steel for a corner. From the corner by Whitby, Kevin Brett put his header past the post.

A minute later the Green were awarded a penalty for hand ball by the Referees Assistant, Potters bar were not happy with the decision and it took a long time for the penalty to be taken. Dennis Fenemore stepped up to score from the spot kick giving Steel no chance. At this point players gave the Assistant Referee some feed back which saw Hall sent off for abusive language at the Assistant.

In the 73rd minute another Whitby free kick saw another chance go begging this time Lee Johnson headed over the bar when well placed. Sears had another good chance to equalise when he again broke free from the halfway line, raced around a defender and shot hard at goal only to see Steel push the ball away for another Leverstock Green corner.
