This Banbury team are a newly put together this season and have several players playing up a year band, so against an established strong St Edmunds team it was always going to be a tough fixture. In a fixture as this it is important to start well and keep the game tight, but St Edmunds raced into a 3-0 lead with in the first four minutes. The signs were there that this was going to be a long morning for the Banbury girls, but Banbury kept 100% effort and although four more goals followed to give St Edmunds a 7-0 half time lead - the Banbury girls deserve great credit for keeping their spirits up.
Banbury had a much better second half, and only a late flurry of goals lead to the final score of 12-0. The Banbury girls at no point let their heads drop and created several goal scoring positions through out the game, but lacked the cutting edge that will come with experience. Late on in the second half a long range strike from the impressive Catherine Howse of Banbury was held well be the St Edmunds keeper Sophie Grimson. The St Edmunds keeper was called into action again, when a Banbury strike was deflected at close range by a St Edmunds defender and the keeper made a good reflex save with her trailing leg.
All the best to Banbury for the rest of the season and good luck to the in the cup game against Carterton.
