Westfield Reserves  6    Wookey Reserves  0

Saturday, 10 September 2005

Westfields new look squad took to the field determined to put the previous weeks suprising defeat at Coleford behind them.
Westfield started the match strongly with Reeves, Cottle and Reynolds in the center of midfield dominating, and Wookey were forced to defend stoutly with a couple of last ditch tackles coming in.
With 10 mins played the heavens opened and Westfield also began to cut loose with some superb passing football. Sketch and Lines were attacking down the left flank at will and with Jamie Lake and Rawlings causing mayhem down the right it only seemed like a matter of time before Westfield scored. After 15mins the opener for Westfield arrived and what a gem it was with Reeves firing home superbly from 25yds. 5 mins later and Westfield went 2 ?0 up with Stenning heading home a superb Cottle corner.
Wookey tried to respond and get back into the match but they could find no way past Croker and Cook at the heart of the Westfield defence and Mark Tucker making his debut in goal for Westfield was becoming a virtual spectator as Westfield piled on the pressure.
With 25 mins gone Westfield virtually made the game safe when a good move involving Lake and Cottle down the right flank resulted with ball being crossed over and Sketch arriving from left back confidently struck the ball home from the edge of the box to make it 3-0.
The rain kept pouring down and Westfield kept pouring on the pressure and following another Cottle corner it was the turn the of right back Rawlings to chest the ball down superbly and fire home into the top corner of the net for the 4th despite Wookey appealing for handball.
In the 38th min it was another good move from Westfield and the ball fell to Rawlings again and he showed the advantage of all that shooting practice at training as he unleashed a rocket of a shot from 25yds that gave the excellent Wookey keeper no chance and giving Westfield a 5-0 lead at halftime.
Managers Josham and Cradock decided to give Matt Lake his 1st start of the season after picking up an injury pre-season and also to give Lines a rest and introduce Brooks for his league home debut at halftime.
Wookey were now playing for pride only and after the break they battled away well though Reynolds and Reeves in the center of Westfield midfield always seemed in control, but Wookey were playing better now and battling more and Tucker in goal had to make a couple of superb saves to keep Wookey out. Brooks was working hard on the left midfield and was producing all kinds of tricks and stepovers that sometimes fooled his own players let alone the opposition but Westfield were enjoying themselves and playing some good football despite not adding to the scoreline.
It was a case of the Lake, Lake show on Westfields right hand side with Jamie and Matt linking up really well and with a bit more luck in front of goal both of them could have scored.
With 10 mins left Josham took off the hard working Stenning and put himself on upfront and with 5 mins to go it was some good work from Cottle resulting in him hitting the post with the ball coming back perfectly for Josham to tap in starting scenes of wild celebration as it was the first goal Josham had scored for a few seasons and didn?t everyone know about it afterwards!!
All in all though this was a far better performance from Westfield and a thoroughly deserved victory.
