Farrington Gurney  1    Coleford Athletic  4

Saturday, 28 January 2006

Coleford went top of the Mid-Somerset league with a comprehensive 4-1 win at Farrington which was a credit to both sides in bitterly cold blustery conditions. The opening exchanges were fairly even but it was the visitors who took the lead after 15 minutes, Tony Burton the first to pounce on a bouncing ball to rifle it low into the net from 18 yards. Lance Cray was then denied by the home keeper as the game was played mainly in the Farrington half. John Billing's excellent marshalling of his defence restricted the home team to long range, off target shots. On the half time whistle Dan Welch was just wide but Coleford deserved their 1-0 lead.
The visitors mostly dominated the second half, Welch should have done better when clean through, and in the 58th minute Adam Cray burst through but the defenders desperate tackle saw him lob his keeper for an own goal and Coleford's second.
Farrington were reduced to 10 men when Leon Rigby was sent off for his second yellow card offence and immediately Coleford broke forward, Welch heading home off the post from an accurate Adam Cray cross to end the match as a contest with the third goal. Farrington pulled a goal back, Kevin Carter sliding home a rebound off the post after a Billing mistake with what was Farrington's first shot on target after 85 minutes. There was still time for Coleford top scorer Lance Cray to hammer the forth from outside the box in the last minute, the final score 4-1. To the amazement of his team mates John Billing was ajudged the Man of the Match. Saturday is the Dimmock Green knock out cup semi final at home to Meadow Rangers. All players meet at 1pm for a 2pm kick off.
