Copland  3    The Wilberforce Wanderers  1

Saturday, 04 April 2009

On a beautiful sunny afternoon Copland needed to win to ensure that a season that had been so full of promise would not peter away. They started brightly moving the ball nicely although Wilberforce proved that they were not as bad as the 7-1 defeat that they suffered at the hands of Copland earlier in the season suggested.

Wilberforce defended very well throughout the game utilising the quality offered by their number 9 to send the ball to him at every possible moment. He was supported very well by their number 10 who offered support and they proved to be a dangerous combination.

Copland utilised the numerous opportunities offered from set-pieces to cause several problems for Wilberforce. Following a long throw from Aaron Silcott the ball dropped kindly for Melford Simpson to send a strong header goal wards. The ball was heading for the net but also got a touch from Andre Anderson to cross the line.

The rest of the half featured some good football by Copland without any real clear cut chances and Wilberforce trying to break out at every opportunity. That left the game in the balance at one nil.

Copland who had to make two substitutions due to injury illustrated the strength of their squad as they upped the tempo in the second half. Clever passing between Stefan Kellar, Melford Simpson and Aaron Silcott released Jermaine Johnson just outside the box on the left hand side to control and finish with his left foot across the keeper. 2 nil.

Wilberforce were not down and out and continued to pose problems and got themselves on the score-sheet with a cross that wasn’t dealt with which was headed back into the far corner.

Copland made sure that they continued to move the ball nicely and created a few more good opportunities. This brought its reward when man of the match Juvhan Kellar latched onto a flicked ball from a corner to drive the ball home! Job done and Copland now have to concentrate for the remaining two games of the season, including a season finale against Sloane FC on the 18th of April at Stonebridge which could well decide the fate of the final positions.
