Sunday, 29 August 2004

Both Pewsey Vale and Wootton Bassett now have four points from three games following this local derby league match, poor finishing in front of goal was to let the home side down in front of a bumper crowd of over 250.

This was the third leg, of the day for the Hellenic League Ground Hoppers who had already visited, Winterbourne in the morning, and Letcombe in Berkshire in the afternoon.

The ground hoppers saw a tight scrap and the game finished all square at 1-1 with goals from Dave Tyler for Bassett and Micky Martin for the Vale.

There were few chances early on with the best falling to Micky Martin for the Vale in the eighth minute when ex-Forest Green keeper Chris Giannangelo was caught off his line following some sloppy Bassett defending but Mark Vaughan blocked Martin's eighteen yard shot and cleared away the danger. A powerful free kick by Matt Bennett on the 25th minute went wide and twelve minutes later another shot on goal by Bennett from the edge of the area, was deflected and was comfortably held by the visitor's keeper Lee Wilson. Dave Tyler then gave Bassett the lead just before the break when, in the 42nd minute Andy Hallett picked out Andy Youngman with a superb through ball before Youngman cut back in and crossed the ball from the left and Tyler slotted in from fifteen yards out. Nick Dodd was denied a chance to get the Vale level from a free kick in stoppage time but the home keeper easily held his long range shot.

Half Time: 1-0

Four minutes after the restart a cross field ball from Ben Gascoyne was met by Bennett who headed keeper Wilson but the ball went wide. A good chance for Bassett to double the advantage fell to Rich Willis his free kick sailed over the Pewsey defence but Youngman hit a poor shot past Wilson and wide on the 59th. Craig Wall shot just over from a tight angle in the 64th minute after taking the ball past Steve Yeardley. Thirteen minutes from time Steve Bunting shot over for Bassett from twenty yards and a minute later Swatton hit over from fifteen yards after a great run down the left as Youngman was left waiting unmarked in the middle of the box. Disaster struck for Bassett two minutes later when a stupid foul by Yeardley put Pewsey in a good position Tom Ritchie swung in the free kick that Giannangelo spilt after having Andy Hallett pushed into him and Martin put the rebound in from ten yards. Both Steve Bunting and Craig Wall then had half chance for either side as both sides gained a valuable point.
