Fairford Town  2    Wantage Town  1

Saturday, 21 August 2004

Fairford Town got off to a winning start in their opening league game of the 2004-05 season with a 2-1 victory over Premier Division new boys Wantage Town at Cinder Lane.

A good attendance of 78 saw Town take the lead in the 18th minute through a Phil Corcoran header. More poor central defending from Wantage allowed Corcoran to add a second goal after 31 minutes. The visiting defence looked all over the place at this stage and Fairford should have gone on to seal a more convincing victory.

Half Time: 2-0

The second period saw Wantage come right back into the match when firstly, Town's new defensive signing making his debut Stuart Hodson received a straight red card for comments made to an Assistant Referee a piece of indiscipline that nearly cost Fairford the points as almost immediately Wantage pulled a goal back when James Price who had a very good game overall dropped a cross for Mills to score. After the sending off and the goal, Fairford were forced to defend deep and soak up endless pressure as Wantage went in search of an equalizer and a share of the spoils.

Three points, a sending off and a booking made it a mixed day for the home side with several concerns coming out of the game, firstly the lack of ability to kill off the opposition when in a good position and secondly a poor lack of discipline on the part of one or two players, something that will have to be addressed over the coming weeks as the season progresses.
