Pewsey storm to grab vital victory

Pewsey picked up a vital home win in their Premier Division relegation clash against Wantage Town, however, they had an early shock when Wantage took the lead in the 17th minute.

The home defence was asleep as the ball crossed to the far post and the unmarked Alan Burton passed to Chris Whitworth to put his side into the lead. Another chance for Wantage to go further into the lead at the break came on the 40th minute but Ross Tyler hit his 25 yard shot well over the bar.

Halt Time 0 ? 1

Pewsey brought on recent signing Dave Marfleet for Mark Bennettin the 55th minute and within a minute Marfleet put the Vale back on level terms looping the ball over the head of keeper Paul Belcher. A minute later he struck again after great work by Doug Imrie who passed to Ross Anderson he pushed the ball side-ways and Marfleet struck to put the Vale into a 2-1 lead. Almost immediately Marfleet became the provider for Anderson to put the home side three up. The Vale was now in complete control and Richard Pearson was unlucky not to have got on the score sheet when he had his powerful shot turned away for a corner on the hour. Great team-work again between Imrie and Barry Flippance got the fourth Pewsey goal when the youngster Tom Ritchie blasted a 20 yard shot past Belcher. Stuart Morrison brought down Imrie in the box but a great save denied Marfleet from getting his hat trick. Dave Hunt denied John Culley from getting one back for Wantage after being set up with a great through ball by Gavin Jones.
