Wantage Town  3    Pegasus Juniors  0

Saturday, 08 March 2003

Pegasus Juniors travelled to lowly Wantage Town for a Premier Division fixture of the Cherry Red Records Hellenic League without four of the players who played the previous weekend against table topping North Leigh.

The visitors made the early running but with a combination of the strong blustery wind and playing down the slope most of the through balls were over hit and watched to the safety of the goal line or gathered by the goalkeeper. In the twenty-fourth minute a late high tackle on Matt Grey leaving three stud marks high on the inner thigh signalled the end of the game for the young defender. Shortly after this Leigh Harris tricked three defenders before the ball ran over the goal line, the experienced Harris then found Del Ewers with a cross field pass; the winger neatly lobbed the advancing Paul Belcher but saw the ball hit the roof of the net. A cross from the Wantage left was headed goal bound by Mark Jones that required a smart save from James Morgan. Substitute Ben Williams found Ewers behind the home defence but Belcher produced an outstanding save, the winger himself was first to the rebound but he fired wide from a narrow angle. Just before half time Wantage took the lead on the counter when Jones got behind the visiting defence before slipping the ball past Morgan.

Half Time: 1-0

Eight minutes after the break a cross from the right by Morrisey deceived Morgan to double the lead. On the hour mark Ewers crossed from the left Gavin Stone headed the ball to Peter Wallace who headed wide when under pressure from the home defenders. Wantage took the game beyond the visitors when Jones scored from what appeared to be an offside position.

This was a game that produced little entertainment or quality football for the small crowd and is one that will be easily forgotten.
