Abingdon United  4    Pewsey Vale FC  0

Saturday, 08 March 2003

It gets no better for Pewsey Vale as their rotten run continues with this 4-0 defeat at Abingdon leaving them deep in the Premier Division relegation zone. Pewsey Vale are still looking for their first League points since their O-O draw with Southall Town early in January.

The Vale missed a chance on four minutes when the home keeper Carl Wilkins turned Ross Andersons shot away for a corner. Abingdon then punished the Vale taking the lead on ten minutes. A free kick by Mark O?Hara from the left side found Richard Pearson in front of goal to head home. Pewsey fought to get back into the match but were unable to make their pressure pay off. Pewsey captain Barry Flippance was unlucky on the 25 minutes he turned and shot from 25 yards only to see his shot go just wide. Moments later home keeper Wilkins denied Tom Ritchie on the 28th minute. On the half hour a great pass by Flippance found Anderson who pushed the ball across the face of goal but there was no one there to put the ball into the net. Abingdon went into the break two up after a powerful and stunning 30 yard shot by Tom Smith gave goalkeeper Paul Clark no chance.

Half Time: 2-0

After the break Pewsey brought on Chris Oram for Gareth Morgan but they were soon having problems and had several escapes that with better finishing the home side should have increased their advantage. Pete Moss beat Clark on the 50 minutes at the near post for the United?s third. Pewsey lost Mark Bennett through injury one minute later and brought on Mike Ford. Clark with several good save denied Abingdon their chance to increase their score. At the other end United?s keeper Wilkins twice denied Steve Bush the chance to get one back for the Vale. Abingdon?s fourth goal came on 86 minutes when Moss scored on his second attempt after Clark?s initial one handed save.
