Pewsey Vale FC  0    Fairford Town  4

Tuesday, 04 March 2003

Long serving Pewsey defender Tony Dyer, had a penalty saved and then put through his own goal as the Vales relegation woes continued on Tuesday night when they were beaten by near neighbours Fairford Town for the second time in a month.

The Pewsey downfall began on 27th minute when Mark Bennett was hauled down inside the area and Dyers spot kick was saved by Fairford number one James Price. Fairford took the lead seven minutes later when Gareth Davies right wing centre into a packed goalmouth was turned past goalkeeper Paul Clark by the luckless Dyer. Poor defending saw the away side double their lead on 38 minutes as the prolific Fairford front man Lee Stoddart was allowed a simple tap-in.

Half Time: 0-2

Fairford continued to push forward forcing Vale to soak up the pressure after the break and better finishing from their strikers would have produced a more comprehensive score line. Pewsey boss Steve Wootton introduced Steve Bush for Bennett but within a minute Stoddard was denied when his effort was turned away for a corner by the busy Clark. Substitute Mick Martin then entered the fray but the switch made little difference Stoddart added his second of the evening shortly afterwards after racing onto a through ball that spit the Pewsey defence and slipped the ball past Clark. Fairford made it four with five minutes to go when a long ball from defender Dominic Dunton found Richard Watkins who lifted the ball over the advancing Clark and into the net. Two good saves from the Pewsey goalkeeper denied the visitors a fifth and Watkins was denied by an upright with a shot on the turn in the last minute.
