Fairford Town  1    Pewsey Vale FC  0

Saturday, 15 February 2003

A good performance from Pewsey Vale against eighth place Fairford Town deserved at least at least a share of the points in this Premier Division clash.

Vale had a let-off in the 18th minute when Neil Matthews fired over and then had a good chance of their own nine minutes later when keeper James Price denied new signing Mark Bennett with a good save, Bennett was set up by a great move that came from a kick out by Vale keeper Dave Hunt that found Micky Goodwin who passed to Ross Anderson who found Barry Flippance who pushed the ball wide to give Bennett his chance to shoot at goal. At the other end Pewsey had another let off when Jeremy Newton stuck the crossbar. Fairford were awarded a penalty in the 31st minute when Goodwin was adjudged to have handled the ball but Dominic Dunton fired the spot kick wide. Pewsey continued to live dangerously and for better finishing from the home side would have gone into the break behind.

Half Time: 1-2

The deadlock was broken in the 59th minute when a quickly taken free kick caught out the Pewsey defence and Newton fired home. Pewsey battled on and should have got some reward for their effort, Tom Ritchie who came on at the start of the half for Kia Dorland and he had a great chance to put the Vale back level but shot wide. Fairford brought on Dave Legg and Chris Knowles to try and push on their advantage in the 70th minute and Pewsey brought on Chris Oram for Steve Bush three minutes later, seven minutes later they lost Bennett through injury bringing on Micky Martin.

The result drops Pewsey into the relegation zone and leaves Pewsey still seeking a win under manager Steve 'Nobby' Wootton.
