Didcot Town  2    Gloucester United  0

Saturday, 15 February 2003

Despite not playing at their best Didcot still maintained their winning start to 2003 with an eighth straight victory against Gloucester United on Saturday. In truth, the first half was eminently forgettable with the home side applying plenty of pressure without really troubling United keeper Adam Bennett.

Terry Morrisey was presented with the first chances of the game but failed to find the target with either. Andy Cooper reacted first to a quick Nigel Emsden free kick in the 12th minute but saw his prodded shot fly wide of the post. When the visitors? only shot of the game from Keith Williams sailed wide in the 13th minute Town keeper Keith McLoughlin became a spectator for the remainder of the match. A brilliant move ended with Bennett saving well from Jamie Heapy in the 16th minute and Damien Oglesby should have done better with a shot that flew over the bar shortly afterwards. Ian Concannon had a shot on the turn easily saved before Emsden had a powerful header saved as the first half ended goalless.

Half Time: 0-0

Didcot manager Pete Foley must have had a few choice words to say at the interval and whatever he said paid immediate dividends. With their first attack of the second half Didcot?s Oglesby sent over a perfect cross for Concannon to head home. The goal was Concannon?s 30th League goal of the campaign and it also meant that he has now scored in each of Town?s last 8 games. Concannon could have added a second five minutes later following good work from Fletcher Hoey and Morrisey also came close after a fine move involving Darren McNamara but Bennett was in superb form in the Gloucester net to deny them both. Bennett produced a fingertip save to deflect Oglesby?s header over the bar in the 77th minute and he then pulled off a stunning save to thwart Emsden in the closing stages. However, Town finally found a way past Bennett when Adam Pilling notched his first for the club in the last minute to secure the points for the home side which moves them into the top three in the Premier Division table for the first time since early September.
