Pegasus Juniors  2    Wootton Bassett Town  0

Saturday, 01 February 2003

Following an impressive victory last week Pegasus started this game as if all they had to do was turn out and the points would be awarded to them. The visitors soon proved that was not the case and were unfortunate not to have taken the lead in the first half; however, after words from the management team the Hereford side produced a performance worthy of the league status and two goals eventually saw them finish comfortable winners.

During the first half several good stops by Matt Taylor kept the home side in the game, with one he received an injury to his thigh that had there being a goalkeeper on the substitutes bench would have seen him replaced at half time. Gavin Stone had two difficult chances that he felt he should taken. These were the only other incidents of note in a poor 1st half.

Half Time: 0-0

After the break when presumably Paul Mann and Chris Hyde had a few choice words to say to their charges, the home side played with more determination and showed a greater will to win than in the first period. In the 55th minute Matt Gray won the ball and passed down the line to Gavin Stone who after beating two defenders slipped the ball to Neal Hotchkiss in space just inside the penalty box, with room to pick his spot he calmly drove the ball past keeper Richard Stevens. Soon after Del Ewers wriggled free of his marker but his shot, under pressure, was easily saved by Stevens. Bassett were unfortunate not to have gained an equalising goal when a free kick taken quickly by Stephen Yeardley beat the defensive wall, however man of the match Matt Taylor already moving to his right, made a superb save low to his left by pushing the ball against the upright to enable his defensive team mates to clear the ball to safety. Shortly afterwards Darren Preece set Del Ewers free his cross was met by Pete Wallace who instantly shot but straight at the keeper. Sixteen year old substitute Lewis Jones making his debut for the club crossed the ball from the right to pick out Ewers who cleverly found Wallace his first time shot skidded off the top of the crossbar. Ewers himself tested Stevens with a vicious shot that knocked the keeper off his feet but the Town defence cleared the danger. Pegasus, eventually gained their just rewards with five minutes of normal time remaining, Hotchkiss and Adriano Girolami exchanged several passes before the latter found Ewers with a pin point pass from the goal line; the little midfield player headed the ball back into the top corner of the goal to record his second goal in as many games. The strong visiting side pushed forward at every opportunity during the remainder of the match but the now confident and determined Pegasus battled to prevent a score and record their first league clean sheet of the season.
